There’s a lot of talk about healing the nervous system these days, but in my experience, you can’t truly heal it without first understanding why it became dysregulated in the first place.
Awareness is often the first hurdle, and if you’ve reached that point, you’re already further along than you realise.
Sometimes healing is forced upon us through burnout, illness, anxiety, or life circumstances. Other times, we seek it out because we know there has to be more to life than simply surviving.
My own journey has taught me that a natural approach was the way forward. After self-medicating for more than 25 years, I’m now almost six months sober. My body was no longer willing to tolerate the neglect, and I knew it was time to understand the deeper reasons behind my anxiety rather than continue numbing it.
Small rituals. Daily resets. Self-reflection. Honest conversations. Compassion for myself.
None of these things “fixed” me, but they helped me address the root causes and create a greater sense of calm and safety within myself.
Healing isn’t a destination. It’s an ongoing relationship with ourselves. Some days are easier than others, but every step counts.
May we continue to meet ourselves—and each other—with compassion, patience and grace.
