Veterinarians play a pivotal role in raising awareness about zoonoses and working to prevent them, and today on World Zoonoses Day, here at Vetnostics we want to acknowledge this important work that veterinarians do, as part of the One Health approach which recognises the interconnection of human, animal and environmental health.

World Zoonoses Day commemorates Louis Pasteur’s successful administration of the first rabies vaccine in 1885, marking a milestone in disease prevention. Controlling zoonotic disease threats involves responsible animal care, vaccination and optimising environmental hygiene, and Vetnostics is proud to help veterinarians to provide the highest quality care to their patients to minimise zoonotic disease risks.

Following the recent identification of H5N1 avian influenza in southern Western Australia and South Australia, Vetnostics reminds clients that samples from animals with suspected or confirmed high-risk zoonotic infections must be submitted directly to their state agriculture department laboratory or to the CSIRO Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) in Geelong, where applicable.

Cytology is a useful tool in the evaluation of masses and diseases of solid organs, and, in comparison to histology, it's inexpensive, minimally invasive and provides rapid results. WAVESCON26! Vetnostics were proud to support WAVESCON26, the annual conference organised by Western Australian Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (WAVES), which brings together the Western Australian veterinary community for a day of continuing education and celebration of our profession.

The event program featured a diverse range of presentations, with one dedicated nursing/general stream, two veterinary streams, and a professional growth stream, so there was something for every member of the veterinary team!

Vetnostics were part of the trade exhibition, with Vetnostics WA Veterinary Support officer Shehan Panabokke and Vetnostics WA veterinary liaison officer Rachel Youlden, joined by Guide Dogs WA ambassador guide dog Zuma - an 8 year old former working guide dog! 🐾

It's World Turtle Day, and as we celebrate these remarkable animals, an insight into one of the diseases our veterinary pathologists commonly diagnose in turtles - Spirorchidiasis, a debilitating and often fatal parasitic disease which can affect marine and freshwater turtles around the globe, including populations around Australia. The disease is driven by various genera of blood flukes, which live in the heart and major blood vessels of affected turtles, causing inflammation to the blood vessels and potential thrombosis. Spirorchidiasis is a major cause of stranding and mortality in endangered marine turtles. Vetnostics welcomes Emma Brown as our new Veterinary Liaison Officer for Victoria.

Emma brings over six years of hands-on experience as a veterinary nurse with a strong focus on animal behaviour, welfare, and low-stress handling. She has worked closely with animals across a variety of clinical and enrichment settings, supporting both animals and their owners with care and compassion.

Emma is currently expanding her knowledge through further study in animal behaviour and training. At home, she is kept on her toes by her two cats Pudding and Peach, one Afghan hound named Philly Cheesesteak, and one axolotl - called Pastrami!

As one of our Veterinary Liaison Officer's, Emma is an important point of contact for our veterinary practices - and she looks forward to meeting you all soon! Welcome Emma!
