We were told we could have it all.
No one mentioned the cost.
For most of human history, women didn’t do this alone. They lived close. In community. Multigenerational households where the load was shared, where a child was raised by many hands, where a woman recovering from birth or illness or grief had others around her.
That infrastructure didn’t just disappear. We dismantled it. And then told women the resulting exhaustion was a personal failing.
I think what we’re seeing now, in the burnout, the hormonal disruption, the bodies that won’t settle, is what happens when you remove a species from the conditions it evolved in and tell it to perform anyway.
We were never meant to carry this alone.
