🎲 Worst Case Scenario… but make it speech therapy! 🦈🦍😬
One of my favourite games for working with older kids is Worst Case Scenario.

We each get three cards showing some pretty terrible situations, and then comes the fun part: deciding which one would you rather face… and which one would be the absolute WORST?

But what I really love is the conversation that happens along the way.
🦈 “Well… what kind of sharks are they?”
🦍 “Is there food on the Island?”
🤔 “Am I allowed to get away?”
💭 “Actually, this one looks worse, BUT…”

Suddenly, we're working on problem-solving, lateral thinking, inferencing, explaining our reasoning, comparing options, flexible thinking and seeing that there can be more than one way to look at a situation.
It’s also a great reminder that sometimes we need more information before we can make a decision-something that can be tricky for lots of kids!

And because there isn't necessarily one “right” answer, it creates some fantastic debates and plenty of laughs along the way.

Speech therapy for older kids doesn’t always have to look like worksheets. Sometimes it looks like arguing over whether you’d rather face a shark or a gorilla! 😂🦈🦍

THERAPY RESOURCES |🧲Sometimes the simplest things make the BEST therapy motivators!

Today’s speech sound practice involved magnetic buttons + a magnetic wand… and they were an absolute HIT! 🙌

We practised our target speech sounds, and after each set it was time to use the wand to collect the magnets.

The excitement of watching them snap onto the wand made doing “just one more” practice word much more appealing! 😂

Speech sound therapy often involves lots and lots of repetition-but repetition doesn’t have to feel repetitive.

By adding something a child genuinely enjoys, we can:
⭐ Encourage more practice trials
⭐ Support attention and engagement
⭐ Build turn-taking and anticipation
⭐ Keep therapy playful and positive
⭐ Make practising tricky sounds feel like a game

And sometimes… the therapy resource they love most is simply a pile of magnetic buttons and a wand! 🧲

At Mandurah Speech Pathology, we love finding the little things that motivate each child and weaving them into therapy💛

THERAPY THROUGH PLAY| and stopping a robber from escaping jail! 🔦🚨

Another fun cooperative game at MSP today!
The mission? Work together to stop the robber escaping from jail👮‍♀️
We each have five cards that the other player can’t see, and we take turns placing our pieces to block the robber’s escape tunnels. The tricky part? Sometimes the other player puts their piece exactly where you were planning to go! 😬
And that’s where some fantastic therapy opportunities happen.

Rather than playing against each other, we have to work together towards the same goal, while practising:
⭐ Turn-taking
⭐ Problem-solving
⭐ Managing unexpected changes
⭐ Communicating ideas
⭐ Working as a team
⭐ Navigating those little moments of frustration when someone takes “your spot”

There’s no winner and loser-we either stop the robber together… or he escapes! 😱
Games like this are such a great way to practise real-life skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.
And thankfully today… the robber did NOT get away! 🚔😂

🦖🌋 Just another Monday afternoon in speech therapy…

Did we spend majority of today’s session carefully getting ALL the dinosaurs standing up?

Yes. Yes, we did.
Did those dinosaurs then get completely obliterated by a volcano and lava?

Yes. Yes, they did. 🌋😂

Did one unfortunate dinosaur get burnt in the lava, come back as a skeleton dinosaur, and proceed to eat everything else?

Also yes. Apparently that’s where the story needed to go. 💀🦖

Did we still manage to target the language goals we’re currently working on throughout all of this prehistoric chaos?

Yes. Yes, we did. 🙌

Did we have lots of fun?

Absolutely.

Was dinosaur extinction, volcanic destruction and a slightly terrifying skeleton dinosaur on my bingo card for a Monday afternoon?

No. No, it was not. 😂

Sometimes the best sessions happen when you follow the child’s lead, lean into their interests and find ways to weave their therapy goals into the play they’re already excited about.
Because when a child is engaged, connected and having fun, there are SO many opportunities for communication and learning.

Sometimes you have a beautifully planned therapy session.
And sometimes… the dinosaurs get obliterated by a volcano. 🌋🦖💀
And honestly? Both can be great therapy.

CUTENESS OVERLOAD| We can all agree... the only thing better than therapy is therapy with puppies! 🐶❤️

Miss Z brought in the family's foster puppy today, and he completely stole the show. Meet Mickey Rat (yes, that's really his name! 😂).

Mickey is being fostered through No Pup Cleft Behind. He was born with a cleft palate, so he's currently tube-fed and needs lots of extra love and care. From behind he really does look a little bit like a rat... but from every other angle he's absolutely adorable.

As cute as he was, Mickey wasn't just a distraction-he actually became the perfect conversation starter. We ended up getting so much more chatting, describing, questioning, and spontaneous language than we otherwise might have. Sometimes the best therapy moments happen when you're simply sharing something exciting together.

I did ask if I could keep him... apparently the answer was no. 😅🐾

😊| This face reminding me exactly why I LOVE being a Speech Pathologist. ❤️

Look at Mr. A's face. 🥹

His mum sent me this gorgeous photo after I took a picture (at his request 😊) of the birthday cake he had proudly created out of Play-Doh during our therapy session.

That smile says it all.

I've been seeing Mr. A for quite some time now, and when I stop to look back at where he started compared to where he is today, it honestly blows me away. Progress isn't always loud. It doesn't' always noticeably jump out at you between therapy appointments. Sometimes it's built through lots of little moments, tiny steps, and lots of persistence. Then one day, you realise just how far a child has come 😊
