Safety Team Undertakes Comprehensive Rescue Training Exercise

The Event Solutions Motorsport Safety Team once again put its members through their paces during the organisation's monthly training night on Thursday, completing a full-scale motorsport extrication and patient transport exercise, combined with scene control and team leader training.

The training scenario involved the complete extrication of a simulated injured driver from a race car through to transfer onto a Patient Transport Vehicle (PTV) ambulance stretcher.

Training activities included:

* Helmet removal
* HANS and Simpson Hybrid head and neck restraint removal
* Spinal extrication jacket application
* Driver rescue and extrication techniques
* Vehicle-to-spine board transfers
* Rescue basket operations
* Over-terrain casualty transport
* Patient loading into the Motorsport Patient Transport Vehicle via a Ferno stretcher

“These team training nights are the key to reducing response times and improving patient outcomes at motorsport events,” said Team Coordinator **Steve Lemm**.

The exercise continued with an over-terrain rescue simulation, requiring team members to transport the patient safely over obstacles & from the basket and into the Patient Transport Vehicle. The scenario formed part of the Event Solutions Motorsport Safety Team's ongoing training and competency program.

The team also completed refresher training in Emergency Basic Life Support (BLS), utilising electronic CPR simulation manikins that provide real-time feedback on the effectiveness of chest compressions and rescue breaths.

“The Bluetooth electronic feedback systems gave us live updates on the quality of each team member's CPR performance over a ten-minute period,” said **Sharee Griffith**, ESM Medical Services Manager and Critical Care Nurse Educator.

The monthly training program provides both new and experienced volunteer team members with exposure to a variety of realistic motorsport safety and emergency response scenarios.

“These are not new philosophies,” said **Martin Doxey**, Safety Team Director. “Many of these methods were originally developed at the Calder Park Thunderdome during the late 1980s and early 1990s by my mentor, Patrick O'Neill, who continued to refine and teach these techniques through the Winton Safety Team. This means more time racing on the track or on the stage.”

Event Solutions Motorsport Safety Team has continued to develop and refine these rescue and emergency response procedures, supported by Incident Response Vehicles equipped with an extensive range of medical, fire, rescue and extrication equipment meaning they lead the way in Australia for an American style Safety Team adapted to Australian conditions.

The organisation remains committed to delivering industry-leading motorsport safety services and has successfully applied these techniques at major events, including the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship since 2009.

Event Solutions Safety Team Conducts Annual Motorsport Medical Extrication & Rescue Training Night with Raceline Racewear and Brake & More Motorsport.

The Event Solutions Safety Team proudly returned for its annual specialist motorsport medical, rescue and extrication training night alongside Raceline Racewear and the Brake & More Motorsport team.

The intensive hands-on training session focused on advanced driver rescue procedures and emergency medical intervention techniques used in high-performance motorsport environments.

Training scenarios included controlled driver extrication from a race-prepared vehicle while working with modern motorsport safety systems and confined cockpit conditions.

Crew members trained extensively in:

* Driver extrication procedures
* Helmet removal techniques using HANS and Simpson Hybrid neck restraint systems
* Use of spinal extrication jackets and spine boards & straps. Colour coded for quick and easy transfers.
* Patient transfer procedures using a Ferno ambulance stretcher from race car to Patient Transport Vehicle - Alpha unit l.
* Safe removal from OMP race seats and OMP harness systems with head restraint wing seats.
* Cervical collar application and stabilisation
* Use of lifting bars and extrication lifting straps with spinal extrication jackets
* Emergency seat belt cutting procedures using OMP safety tools
* Operation of Holmatro battery-powered hydraulic rescue equipment (“Jaws of Life”)

Event Solutions Safety Team operates as an American-style NASCAR-inspired motorsport safety and medical response unit, adapted specifically for Australian motorsport conditions and events.

The team’s incident response vehicles, are Australia’s most extensively prepared purpose built units, are fully equipped with both rescue and medical, as well as basic fire suppression intervention capabilities to support competitors, officials, and spectators at motorsport events.

The organisation is supported by a highly skilled volunteer workforce including emergency doctors, critical care nurses, paramedics, and advanced first responders, all with specialised training in motorsport extrication, rescue operations, and fire suppression.

“This annual training is essential in maintaining the highest standards of motorsport emergency response,” the team said. “Working directly with race teams and equipment suppliers allows us to continually refine our rescue procedures and ensure our personnel remain prepared for real-world incident scenarios.”
