Something worth sharing for anyone thinking about end of life choices.

Since July 2025, shrouded cremation has been legal in NSW - and most people have no idea.

It means families can now choose to farewell a loved one wrapped simply in cloth, without a coffin, in a way that feels natural, simple and deeply human.

I experienced a shrouding ceremony earlier this year during Death Walker training. It was one of the most unexpectedly moving experiences I've ever had - quiet, tender, and a reminder that death care doesn't have to be complicated or clinical.

I've written about what it is, where it's available, and who it might suit. Link in comments.

Like whether there’s a markup on the flowers, the cremation fee, the death certificates.

Like who actually handles everything - or whether the person you meet is the last you’ll speak to.

Like what happens if you change your mind.

You are allowed to ask. A good funeral director will welcome it.

Something most families don't know - and really should.

Before choosing a funeral director, there are questions worth asking that most people never think to raise. About who actually handles everything. About costs and markups. About your rights.

We have put together 10 of the most important ones - written honestly, without jargon, to help families feel informed rather than overwhelmed.

This is why we do this work.

Navigating a funeral for the first time is overwhelming, and nobody should have to feel alone in it.

If you need someone to talk to, Matt is always here.

Something I don't think gets talked about enough.

When people think about funeral work, they think about the person doing it. They rarely think about the people standing quietly beside them.

My wife trusted this work before I fully did. The early mornings, the emotional weight, the unpredictability - she absorbs all of it and holds space for me the way I hold space for the families I work with.

This one is for every partner loving someone through work that is hard and meaningful in equal measure.

Expect the unexpected.

In this work, something almost always goes wrong on the day. A song that won’t play. A microphone that cuts out. A screen that says - waiting for connection - at exactly the wrong moment.

And then exactly the right moment.

Because that’s what a funeral is, really.

A room full of people waiting for connection. With each other. With the person they’ve lost. With something bigger than the everyday.

Live your life. Connect with one another.

That’s all any of us are really here for.

Some farewells feel closer to home than others.

This one was for someone connected to a family I’ve known for over twenty years. Standing at that lectern, I was aware of something I don’t always get to feel so clearly - the full weight of what it means to be trusted with this.

Not just the arrangements, not just the ceremony, but the story of an entire life. The relationships built over decades, the love that filled that room, the quiet legacy left behind in the people standing in front of me.

She had a hard few years at the end. But she was never lonely. Family was always there, always central, and that, more than anything, is what I hope people remember about how she lived.

I wrote about this service, and several others from the past month, in my latest blog - The Weight and Privilege of Bearing Witness.

Because some months in this work change you, even if only a little.
