Why We Do Murph

The CrossFit Hero WOD Murph is named in honour of Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery.

Originally called “Body Armor,” this workout was one of Murphy’s favourites.

During Operation Red Wings, Murphy led a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team deep in the mountains of Afghanistan. After releasing three local goat herders they believed to be civilians, the team was discovered and attacked by a force of more than 100 Taliban fighters.

As his team suffered devastating injuries and their communications failed, Murphy knowingly exposed himself to enemy fire to make a satellite phone call for help. Despite being shot, he completed the call and continued fighting to protect his teammates.

Murphy, along with teammates Matthew Axelson and Danny Dietz, lost their lives that day. A rescue helicopter sent to assist was also shot down, killing 16 more service members in the largest single-day loss in Naval Special Warfare history.

Murph isn’t just a workout. It’s a tribute to courage, sacrifice, leadership, and putting others before yourself.
