Sometimes, the most powerful interventions don’t come from plans, policies, or structured strategies.
They happen in the moment.

At Heed & Brim Care Services, we recently observed something simple ,yet deeply impactful.

A participant was experiencing a meltdown, and support workers were doing their best to manage the situation. Then something unexpected happened. A person in a costume, simply being present, playful, and engaging , unintentionally redirected the participant’s attention.

Within moments, everything shifted.

The distress reduced.
The energy changed.
The participant began to calm… and soon after, was laughing.

No complexity.
Just a moment of connection.

This reflects something we strongly believe at Heed & Brim:

Not all support starts with a question.

In disability support, we are taught to ask first, and rightly so. Choice and control must always lead the way. But in reality, not every need can be clearly expressed in the moment.

Sometimes it shows up as a change in behaviour.
A shift in mood.
A familiar pattern that signals something is not right. In those moments, good support is not about taking over.
It is about being attentive enough to respond, while still protecting the person’s autonomy.

That might mean:
• Creating a calm space before distress escalates
• Gently initiating support based on known preferences
• Adjusting the environment to reduce triggers

Then checking in, once the moment allows.
This is not about acting without permission.
It is about supporting in a way that still centres the person.

Because real care is not just reactive.
It is observant, respectful, and built on understanding.
