Pretty much everything we are taught about how to manage our eating (and our weight) has opposite effect.

If you had ended feeling anxious or distressed around food, where you find yourself craving and eating “all the wrong things”, if you have that constant “food noise” and if you have lost weight only to regain with interest, then this should make sense to you.

We are always taking new clients and would to help you escape diet culture - text us today 0419 585 415

I am not trying to scare people with this post, but as a dietitian working with people on GLP-1s, I feel I have responsibility to share this information.

I have started to look much more closely at the nutrition of my clients taking a GLP-1, especially those on higher doses and who appear to only be eating ~50% of typical energy requirements. Often the quality of their food choices is excellent, but it is almost impossible to get adequate long-term nutrition if you are eating

This post is not to suggest people should or shouldn’t take them. This is post is to help people who have made the decision not to (but are now questioning that decision with all the GLP-1s noise), to know that there are plenty of people choosing not to take them, especially once they have the full information.

Restrictive eating is also a central risk factor in developing an eating disorder.

I am posting this after one of my clients expressed concern over how a number of her friends and colleagues are following restrictive programs and now showing disordered eating behaviours.

This client came to see me after noticing how the restrictive gym program she had been following was starting to mess with her eating and that she was no longer getting any pleasure from food.

If this description of disordered eating is you, or someone you know, I implore you to consider if this way of eating is really benefitting you. Is it enriching your life; or is it getting in the way of your relationships to other people or things you would dearly like to be part of?

Some food for thought!

After hearing this client story, I thought I’d post this to help spread the word that many dietitians are NOT food police, we don’t put people on diets and we actually spend a lot of time encouraging people to add back in the food they have been restricting in the name of “health”.

I was also recently at a wedding enjoying a glass of wine and when the person I was talking to asked what I did, and I said I’m a dietitian, he looked at my glass of wine and said “how do you explain that”?

I actually have a whole spiel about how what I do is not what people think a dietitian is - and yep, he got that! 😂

I have also surprised a number of people I meet for business reasons when I order a regular (full fat cows milk) latte.

An oldie but a goodie and perfect for a 9 degree day! 🥶

As the weather gets cooler, nothing beats a warm cheese toastie for lunch!

Because diet culture and the “wellness industry” is allowed to say whatever they want with little regulation, we have reached a point where educated and intelligent people now truly believe a toasted cheese sandwich is unhealthy.

I am constantly surprising my clients when I explain that a toasted cheese sandwich can be a perfectly nutritious meal.

In fact, if all you ate for an entire day was toasted cheese sandwiches (using white bread), you’d get most of your macronutrients and micronutrients, only being low in Vitamin C and a little low Vitamin B6, Magnesium and Iron. Make the sandwich with grainy bread and then you’re only low in Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. Throw in half an orange and you have your vitamin C needs for the day…

Another awesome thing about cheese toasties is all the different things you can add or different types of cheese you can use. I love adding red onion and chilli.

Tell us your favourite addition to the humble cheese toastie.

I found myself asking a client this yesterday as we discussed the relationship with between health and weight and that the two are not synonymous.

The word “health” is so frequently linked to physical appearance, beauty, fitness and success, without much thought to what true health is.

What does health mean to you? We’d love you to comment and tag a friend who you think would find this question thought provoking.

What I have included as aspects health in this post are by no means exhaustive and we don’t necessarily need all these aspects all the time to have experience health.

It’s been a number of years since I posted this, but I was inspired to post it again after recently reading another post with much the same message.

Yes this is black and white, but so is saying cake is unhealthy, or sugar is toxic, or that being “overweight” leads to ill-health.

Context is everything, but social media grabs and headlines are generally not interested in the detail, it’s all about what gets the most clicks and likes.

Eating cake will not make you a healthy person, but nor will it make you unhealthy. It certainly could however, add to health through social connection - one of the most important aspects of our long-term health.
