Career transitions are difficult — and in EMS, some of them are easy to underestimate because the culture often rewards moving quickly and just getting on with it.

Planning for transitions isn’t always a strong suit when you’re used to responding to what’s right in front of you.

But entering the profession, moving into leadership, stepping away through injury or leave, and eventually retiring can all put a significant amount of pressure on identity, routine, belonging and purpose.

You don’t need to have every transition perfectly mapped out.

But knowing these periods can hit harder than expected is a good place to start.

Sometimes preparation is simply recognising: this is a transition, not just another thing to push through.

Motivation waxes and wanes.

Whether you’re leading a team or trying to get yourself moving, the question is often the same: how do you unlock more internal motivation instead of relying on pressure all the time?

One framework I come back to a lot is Self-Determination Theory.

At a simple level, it points to three important ingredients: autonomy, competence/mastery, and connection/relatedness.

If you can redesign a task — or the environment around it — so people have more choice, can see themselves making progress, and can connect the work to something that matters, motivation tends to feel less like swimming against the tide.

You won’t always feel motivated.

But you can make motivation easier to access.

I take professionalism, empathy and evidence very seriously.

What I don’t take seriously is the idea that being a psychologist requires me to become partisan.

If you want someone to coddle every perspective you hold, this probably isn’t the page for you. Sometimes you’ll hear things you agree with, sometimes you won’t, and neither changes how I treat people.

I want this page to be a place for disagreement, open discussion and some fairly old-fashioned libertarian values: you’re allowed to think differently, say what you think, challenge ideas and have your own ideas challenged in return.

That includes calling out distorted thinking when I see it, even when that thinking happens to align with a particular political narrative.

It’s also why I don’t block people simply for disagreeing with me. If you show up in good faith, I’m generally happy to have the discussion. Ad hominem attacks are not required.

If that sounds like your kind of corner of the internet, come on down. And if you happen to like psychology as well, the more the merrier.
