I am saddened to hear of the loss of Professor Tony Walker who headed Ambulance Victoria for over a decade before his retirement due to illness in 2022. Though I didn't know him personally, I had the pleasure of a few small chats and hearing him speak at ARC conferences and a Good sam event. His passion and care for the profession and the people it served was deep. Condolences to family, friends and the whole AV community.

Today I went to run a CPR refresher for nurses at a Dialysis clinic. Upon arrival, I saw a Fire rescue Victoria truck and 2 AV ambulances outside. I walked in and there were FRV and AV crew resuscitating a patient. After working for well over 20 minutes, they managed to stabilise the casualty. This is an example of the great work and coordinated efforts of our emergency services. But this also reminds us of the importance of front line First Aiders and the importance of maintaining basic life support skills. The nurses I had trained 12 months ago and was about to train again, had performed CPR on their patient until emergency services personnel took over. This part of the chain of survival is critical to buy time and maintain blood flow to vital organs. To have seen this all work out, with a casualty that was taken to the ambulance alive, filled me with immense gratitude to all involved. Fire rescue Victoria, Ambulance Victoria and of course the very nurses I had come to train that started and maintained CPR until handover. You are all incredible and a family can hold each other tonight thanks to you all.

This is such a great outcome. He is alive and still loving his family thanks to CPR and defibrillation. Please encourage your family and friends to learn First Aid and CPR. You just never know when it might be needed.

Phil Moore had always been healthy. Then, in his late 50s, his heart stopped suddenly. 💔
Urgent CPR delivered by his wife, brother and community responders, as well as the use of a defibrillator by paramedics on the scene, brought him back. ❤️

Yesterday we trained Year 10 students at a High School in Watsonia and Today the same in Hawthorn. Kudos to the schools for recognising how important First Aid is for everyone, but importantly for young people as they begin to become more independent and navigate their way through adolescence to young adulthood and the ups and downs that come with that.

When someone says they’re not OK, it can feel confronting - and that’s normal.

Your role isn’t to fix their situation. Just listen, try to stay calm, and show you care. A small moment of support can make a big difference.
