I never imagined I would be standing on a stage at Monash University, giving a graduation address! 👩🏻🎓
Last week, I had the incredible honour of speaking to graduates from the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, my two favourite worlds that have shaped so much of who I am and what I do today. It was such a meaningful experience! ❤️
In my speech, I shared what I was like as a student: introverted, sensitive, always overthinking, and a bit of an annoying perfectionist (and I still am!) 🤦🏻♀️
After completing my master's at Monash, there was one small question I couldn't let go of:
"𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥'𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦?"
That question became Reach & Match Inclusive Education Kit, a journey I could never have imagined.
Along the way, I learned something unexpected:
I designed the work. And the work designed me.
The children, teachers and communities I've met have taught me so much about inclusion, courage and what it really means to belong.
I realised that the belonging I was creating for children was also the belonging I had been searching for myself. To be seen. To be heard. To belong without becoming someone else.
One message I wanted to share with the graduates was that:
Belonging can be designed.
Whether we are designing a product, a building, a classroom, we all have the power to create spaces where people feel seen, heard and included.
And sometimes, we just need to give ourselves permission to begin, even without knowing where the journey will take us.
I'm still learning that myself.
Thank you so much to Monash University for this extraordinary opportunity and to my wonderful family for sharing this unforgettable moment with me! 👦🏻🧒🏻
To all the graduates: congratulations! I hope you give yourselves permission to find out what you can create and who you might become along the way. 🎈
Special thanks for your warm encouragement: Geraldine Johns-Putra, Craig White, Mary Ryan, Mel Dodd, Robbie Napper, Roslyn Chaffey and Elliot Coombe ❤️
