Becoming a parent is a big change for anyone, but for someone with ADHD, it can feel overwhelming.
Recently, I supported a young man who was about to become a dad for the first time. He had ADHD, little family support, and was doing everything he could to be there for his partner. But underneath, he was struggling.
It might have looked like he was angry or pulling away, but really, he was overwhelmed. The lack of routine, the big emotions, the unknowns… it was too much for his nervous system. He wasn’t being difficult, he was scared, overstimulated, and didn’t know how to cope.
At Nurture Assist, we don’t just look at behaviour, we look at what’s underneath. We gave him tools, clear support, and a calm space to understand what was going on. And the change was incredible.
With the right kind of support, he didn’t just show up as a dad, he became the steady support his partner needed, and the father he hoped to be.
If you're neurodivergent and finding the transition to parenting tough, you're not alone and we’re here to help.
