🌿 Triphala — Ayurveda’s Three Friends 🌿
Have you ever wondered why Haritaki, Amalaki and Vibhitaki are often described in Ayurveda as “Mitratrayam” — the three friends? 🤝
The word Triphala itself means “three fruits.” These three fruits have been used together in Ayurveda for centuries, each bringing its own unique qualities to the combination.
🍃 Haritaki (हरीतकी)
Terminalia chebula
Haritaki is often called “Pathya”, meaning something that is beneficial or wholesome. In Ayurveda, it is especially associated with Vata and is traditionally valued for supporting digestion and healthy elimination. It is also regarded as a Rasayana, traditionally used to support overall wellbeing and vitality.
🍋 Amalaki (आमलकी)
Phyllanthus emblica
Amalaki, commonly known as Amla or Nelli, is one of the most treasured fruits in Ayurveda. It has a naturally sour taste but is traditionally described as having five of the six tastes. It is considered particularly supportive of Pitta balance and is valued as a nourishing and rejuvenating Rasayana.
🌰 Vibhitaki (विभीतकी)
Terminalia bellirica
Vibhitaki is the third member of this beautiful trio. It is traditionally associated with Kapha and is valued for supporting healthy digestion and the respiratory system. Its predominant taste is Kashaya (astringent).
🤍 Why “three friends”?
Ayurveda looks at these three fruits not simply as individual herbs, but also at how their qualities complement one another.
🌿 Haritaki — Vata
🍋 Amalaki — Pitta
🌰 Vibhitaki — Kapha
Together, they form Triphala, traditionally regarded as a formulation that can support overall balance.
And perhaps that’s what makes the name “Mitratrayam” — three friends so beautiful. ❤️
