LET'S GO!

That poster.
That's ME - BUT only when it comes to training.

If I applied that same attitude to everything else in my life — I'd be retired by now. Sitting on a beach somewhere (with my wife Karla of course). Definitely still training though.

I genuinely cannot imagine a life without movement. Without exercise. Without that daily non-negotiable that keeps everything else working.

And yet — there are people out there for whom exercise is simply not a thought.
Not a consideration.
Not even on the radar.

Finish work, go straight home, turn the telly on. Done. Or worse.

I've been trying to understand that for 40 years.
Still can't - it doesn't make sense.

Humans are designed for physical movement. If you don't do it - you fall apart!

Here's a FACT — people who move, think better. Feel better. Handle life better.

It's not complicated. It's not a theory. It's not a sales pitch.

It's just how it is. No argument! Unless you're not a human.

MURRAY'S WINTER OATS

Winter's here and Winter Oats are back at Murray's on Sixth in Maroochydore and they taste as good as they look. Been waiting all summer for these. They are that good.

Strawberries, cranberries, coconut, fresh mint. A coffee on the side doing exactly what a coffee does - the perfect winter breakfast. For me anyway.

Now. My home version?

Nowhere near as good as Murray's.

Similar idea, but completely different ex*****on. Oats, whatever fruit is around, throw an egg through it, some WPI, cinnamon, vanilla and whatever else is lying around - heat it up. No recipe. No measuring. Just good ingredients doing what good ingredients do.

Warm. Filling. And highly nutritious.
The best way to start a cold morning.

Had coffee with an old mate this week.

No phones. No notifications. No scrolling.
Just two blokes and a conversation.

We are the busiest generation in human history.
And somehow the loneliest.
We have a device in our pocket that connects us to eight billion people — and we've never been more disconnected from the one person sitting across the table.

We don't test our ideas anymore. We confirm them.
We don't debate. We block.
We don't challenge each other's thinking.
We just find people who already agree with us and stay there.

Warm. Comfortable. Unchallenged. Safe.

My mate Socrates saw this coming 2,500 years ago.
He never owned a phone. He just understood humans.

SHOOT THE MESSENGER

I had a client walk into the gym for a training session once.

I took one look at her and thought: 'Oh oh. Change of plans today.'

Her posture, the blank expression, the slumped walk. Nothing physical, but lots of nasty stuff bouncing around in her head —

This was not my usual client. Her emotional state had been hijacked, and I had to think quickly. Those programmed sets and reps had to be scrapped.

So, we didn't do sets and reps.

We tidied the dead ball rack instead. All 40 of them.

I'd start on the heavy end; she started on the light.

Then - the kettlebell rack - but we swapped. She got the HEAVY and I did the light! But I wasn’t being mean - they were already on the floor. That’s where they lived - only neatly. And I made sure she was aware of that! I’m not mean and nasty …….. all the time!

And then, it poked through. A hint of a smile. Not a big one, but it was enough for me to ask — "So why did you walk in looking like someone just died and the world's blaming you?"

By the end of the session, all had changed. She had shown that hijacker the door.

We did some more ‘fun stuff’ .. not the usual - and her spirits were high. And she did tell me what the problem was – and it was a bit nasty but I’m not sharing that with you!

Those hijackers though! They are nasty little monsters, but they also exist for a reason. They carry real information. Something in your life is asking – sometimes SCREAMING to be heard.

So, hear it. Pay attention to it. Acknowledge it.

LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE it is delivering to you. Don’t become it. Don’t let it define your identity! Don’t let it rule your life.

Emotions are data, not directives. Accept what they are telling you, take what you need to grow – then shoot the messenger. That’s the best part.

Feel them. Respect them. REGULATE THEM!

Don't let them build your life.

YOU BUILD YOUR LIFE. NOBODY ELSE. NOTHING ELSE.

A NEW GYM SPECIES
Is it just me, or is there a new species of exerciser in gyms these days?

The equipment is better. The science isn't better — but it's better understood, now that our Exercise-blessed PhDs have realised it has to relate to the real world.

And the shoes. The shoes are definitely getting better.

But this new species ferally plaguing gyms everywhere.

They arrive looking the part - like they just stepped off the Olympic podium.
Bright fluoros, skimpy outfits, water bottles that cost more than some of the gym barbells.

The first thing they do — log onto Insta. And it begins. The neurons. All of them - they go into hibernation.

The standard ritual - scan the floor - zoom in on the most comfortable bench. The one most strategically placed in the busiest part of the gym. Approach it slowly. Encircle it. Mark territory with the gym towel and that drink bottle. Adjust headphones. HIt the INSTA THUMBNAIL .... SIT!!

And don't move until the butt goes numb.

Now — I might sound judgemental. But I haven't finished yet.

I understand the connection between social media and neural hibernation is powerful. It cannot be stopped once that button is hit. So we can't judge. We have to be proactive.

We must help this species before they mutate into a biological peripheral — where they and the phone become a symbiotic duo, sharing a nervous system and a very expensive monthly subscription.

Approach them without fear. They are meek and harmless. Then say, firmly and ungently:

"How much longer are you gonna try to get that bench to hatch? It's a bench. Not a bloody egg."

It works every time. The look of amazement when they realise that benches actually do not hatch, is priceless.

You know all is good when the headphones come off.

Big conversation taking place.

The big boys were discussing the prep for Eddies world record deadlift attempt back in March 14, 2015 at the Arnold Classic.

So much work went into setting it up so that as Arnold was walking in the building, Eddie would be heaving 462kg's off the ground.

Fortunately, it went like clockwork.
That's like 23 x 20kg plates he lifted! Them's a lot of plates!

Vince has a message for you and I couldn't agree more.

MOVE. Or don't.

Just know that a pretty ordinary existence is waiting for you at the end of that choice.

The doctors, the hospitals, the medications — and the friends and family who will quietly put their own lives on hold to look after yours.

That's on you. Entirely, completely, one hundred percent on you.

But it's your choice — and hey, it's your life.

Others will just have to put up with your choices.

40 Years in the Gym. Still Not Ready for This

Never a good idea to get into the gym when the local High School lets them loose.

I’m finishing my workout, and a young guy in school uniform stands out.

He’s Kneeling down wrapping resistance bands around the back support of the Leg Press machine – 1, 2 , 3, 4 bands. A kind of herringbone pattern. I can understand that (not really) but I guess it will reduce slippage – even though the machine has handles for that purpose.

Okay!

Then he begins tugging and pulling ‘knee sleeves’ over his school trousers, and then, he pulls out knee wraps and wraps and wraps and wraps over the sleeves making his knees look the size of watermelons.

He then walks to the weight stack - somewhat like a cross between Frankenstein and a scarecrow - and loads a 20kg plate on each side. The next five minutes are spent trying to sit in the Leg Press and get those feet on the foot plate.

Finally, he's in, legs are locked out, but he has to wiggle up the seat then using the handles drags himself down. He’s ready to LEG PRESS!

He releases the safety .... AND ……. NOTHING HAPPENS

His knees are so locked that the weight doesn't move. He’s there for a few moments - confused as to what to do - I wanted to, but I was actually too embarrassed to go over and assist.

He locks the machine and then realises he can’t get out. Reaches for his phone and makes a call - to his mates - training at the other side of the gym.

They come over and pull him out. He’s not happy. Aggressively drags the knee wrappings off and throws them in his kit bag and says to his mates “the leg press is BS. What a pathetic machine.” Actually he said a lot worse – I had to clean it up. - And he walked off.

I thought that was the end of it.

Some 5 minutes later, there he is.

The Basil Fawlty of the weight room.

On the Leg Extension. Fully loaded with the whole stack. He’s rocking back and forward violently - grunting and groaning – almost standing. Meanwhile the lever arm of the Leg Extension isn’t moving an inch.

I stood and watched for a good minute. I just had to. Astounded! Amazed! But not in a good way.

Three PT’s on duty, a manager and two staff. Nobody says anything. But what was worse, and very sad - apart from me, not one other person even noticed it.

What the heck is wrong with this generation?????

Certificates Don't Sweat

Today's fitness industry loves its 'theories.'

But theories don't lift weights. And they don't fit in with real life.

And today's 'qualifications'? They aren't worth the time it takes to print them.

I've been 40 years in the trenches. And here's what it all comes down to:

EXPERIENCE.

Because experience is where theory comes from. Not the other way around.
