NIPS – what is it and why might you consider it? 🤰🏼

One of the questions I’m often asked early in pregnancy is about prenatal screening and which test is right for them.

NIPS (Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening) is a blood test that can be done from 10 weeks of pregnancy. It screens for a number of conditions, including Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. But does not screen for single gene defects such as haemophilia or colour blindness. You can also find the s*x genetics of your baby, if you wish to know! 🩷💙

It’s a very accurate screening test, but it’s important to remember that NIPS is not a diagnostic test. If a result comes back as high risk, further testing may be recommended.

There are a number of different screening options available, and what’s right for one person may not be right for another. I always encourage my patients to ask questions and discuss their options so they feel comfortable and informed about the choices they’re making throughout their pregnancy.

Morning sickness is one of the most common symptoms I see in early pregnancy, and it’s also one of the questions I’m asked about most often.

Here are a few important things to know:

🤍 Nausea usually begins around 7 weeks of pregnancy due to rising hormone levels.
🤍 For most women, symptoms improve by 10–12 weeks, although they can last longer for some.
🤍 Every pregnancy is different, and morning sickness is NOT a sign of how healthy your pregnancy is.
🤍 If you experienced nausea in a previous pregnancy, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have it again.

Simple measures such as eating small, frequent meals, ginger, Vitamin B6, or acupuncture may help. If your symptoms are more severe, there are safe and effective medications available, so speak with your obstetrician about the most suitable treatment for you.

For more information about morning sickness, Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), and what to expect in early pregnancy, visit my website or call our rooms on 0394170146 📞.
