The Story Jar 💛

A Story Jar is a simple yet incredibly meaningful way to capture the memories, laughter, and little moments that made your loved one so special. While flowers eventually fade, stories have a wonderful way of keeping someone close, allowing their personality and legacy to live on through the people who knew them best.

As guests arrive, invite them to write down a favourite memory, a funny story, something they admired, or even a few heartfelt words on a small card before placing it into a beautifully decorated jar. There are no rules—one sentence is just as meaningful as a page full of memories. Children might like to draw a picture, write about their favourite adventure together, or simply share what they loved most.

The Story Jar can remain on display throughout the service, encouraging guests to add their memories whenever inspiration strikes. It often becomes a wonderful conversation starter, with people smiling as they remember moments they may not have thought about for years.

One of the most beautiful parts of this ritual comes after the funeral. In the quiet days and weeks that follow, when the visitors have gone home and life begins to settle, the family can sit together with a cup of tea and slowly read through each story. Some memories will bring tears, others will spark laughter, and many will reveal moments they may never have known. It's like receiving one final gift from everyone who loved that special person.

The Story Jar is especially lovely because it includes everyone, regardless of age. It gives each guest an opportunity to contribute something deeply personal while creating a treasured keepsake that the family can revisit whenever they need a little comfort, a smile, or a reminder that their loved one continues to live on in the stories shared by so many hearts.

🚦Today is International Traffic Light Day, celebrating to invention of the Traffic Light. However, the Traffic Light System can also assist us in the grief journey our loved ones are going through.

The traffic light system is a simple, non-verbal communication tool that helps grieving individuals express their emotional capacity without the pressure of explaining why. By signaling Red (bad day), Orange (doing okay), or Green (up for a visit), you can intuitively support loved ones by respecting their boundaries, providing safe space, and showing up exactly when they need it most.

How the System Helps Their Grief Journey:
🔴Respecting the "Red" Days: A red light means it is a difficult day marked by low energy or heavy emotional challenges. For loved ones, this signals that they need space, rest, or quiet support without the pressure of entertaining visitors.
🔶Honoring the "Orange" Days: An orange light signifies they are doing okay but fluctuating. It indicates they might have the energy for a gentle low-pressure text, a porch drop-off, or a very brief check-in.
🍏Connecting on "Green" Days: A green light means they are feeling relatively well and have the emotional bandwidth for a chat or visit.

It ensures that social connection happens only when they feel ready, reducing feelings of overwhelm for everyone involved. By taking the guesswork out of how to support them, this framework helps eliminate the awkward "What can I do to help?" while preventing you from accidentally intruding on their heavier moments. Resources and templates for implementing these non-verbal check-ins are readily available through community wellness organizations or resources like the Elsa Support Traffic Light Toolkit.

Memory Ribbon Ceremony 🎀

A Memory Ribbon Ceremony is a beautiful way to invite everyone to become part of the farewell, creating something meaningful together as they honour the life of someone they love.

As guests arrive, invite them to write a favourite memory, a few heartfelt words, or even something they will always remember about their loved one onto a coloured ribbon. Children might like to draw a picture, write a simple "I love you," or decorate their ribbon with hearts or stars.

During the service, or as everyone leaves, guests are invited to gently tie their ribbon onto a decorative branch, wreath, or small memorial tree. As each ribbon is added, it becomes a visual reminder of the many lives that were touched and the countless memories shared. What begins as a simple branch gradually transforms into something vibrant, colourful, and full of love—just like the legacy of the person being remembered.

This ritual is especially lovely because it gives every guest, regardless of their age, a quiet and meaningful way to say goodbye. It can bring smiles as memories are shared, spark conversations between generations, and create a lasting keepsake for the family to take home after the service. Long after the day has passed, the ribbons become a reminder that while one life has ended, the love, stories, and memories woven through so many hearts will continue to flutter for years to come. Coloured ribbons can represent so many things such as favourite colour, represent the nature that they loved or the cause in which they believe in.

Today we celebrate Uncle and Aunt Day. It is an annual celebration observed on July 26, dedicated to the role of uncles and aunts in the life of the family and society. This day reminds us that uncles and aunts provide important support in upbringing, care, and shaping values for children, and often become close friends and mentors.
Uncle and Aunt Day emphasizes that family is not only parents but also other close people who can provide support and bring joy. The holiday promotes strengthening family traditions, fostering respect and gratitude toward family members, and reminds us of the value of family ties in a person’s life.

A shout out to my aunts and uncles for being the amazing role models they are and to my siblings for helping to guide my children with me every day. We love you.

When sitting with a family to plan a celebration of life for their loved one, one of the questions I'm asked quite often is, "How can we involve other family members, friends, or even the children?"
The wonderful thing about a personalised service is that there are so many meaningful ways to include others, creating moments that are heartfelt, memorable, and unique to the person being honoured.

Here is one idea:
Paper Plane Farewell ✈️

For someone who had a love of flying, aviation, or simply dreamed of the skies, a paper plane farewell can be a beautiful and uplifting way to say goodbye.

Invite family and friends to write a special message, a favourite memory, or a few heartfelt words on a paper plane. At the conclusion of the service, gather outside and, together, send the planes soaring into the sky. Watching them glide away creates a gentle moment of reflection, a few smiles, and a reminder that love, memories, and the people we cherish are never truly far away.

It's a simple ritual that children especially love to be part of, and one that often leaves everyone with a feeling of connection, hope, and a shared celebration of a life well lived.

International Self-Care Day, celebrated annually on July 24th, highlights the importance of proactive, daily health management.
This reminder is especially vital when navigating grief, as emotional exhaustion often leads people to neglect their own physical and mental well-being.
Practicing self-care—such as maintaining a routine, prioritizing rest, and engaging in gentle movement—is not a replacement for processing loss, but it provides the foundational energy needed to cope.
To encourage grieving loved ones, offer specific, low-pressure support like dropping off a warm meal, taking a short walk together, or simply validating their feelings without judgment. Small, consistent acts of care help gently remind them that their health matters during a deeply painful time.

As I arrived early at Albert Park Lake, there was a quiet sense of peace before family and friends gathered to honour the life of Byron Peterson. Standing beside the lake, with the Melbourne skyline in the distance and the iconic Grand Prix circuit surrounding us, it was impossible not to think of how fitting this place was for Byron's final farewell. A passionate Supercars fan, Albert Park was one of his favourite places, and today, as we scatter his ashes, he will forever rest amongst the atmosphere, excitement and memories of the circuit he loved so much—a place where every passing race will carry a little of Byron's spirit with it.
Rest in Peace Byron 🚘🚦
