🌈 Play-Based Therapeutic Supports for Children with Autism (ASD) 🌈

Every child learns, communicates and connects differently — and sometimes the best learning happens through PLAY. 🧩

At Lotus Mind Play Therapy, play-based therapeutic supports are tailored around each child’s individual strengths, interests and support needs.

Through meaningful and child-led play, sessions can support:

✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Social interaction & connection
✨ Communication skills
✨ Confidence & independence
✨ Attention and engagement
✨ Understanding personal space & boundaries
✨ Transitions and routines
✨ Sensory and emotional needs
✨ Everyday life and self-care skills

🏡 Sessions can be provided across home, school, kindergarten/daycare and community settings, depending on the child’s needs and circumstances.

💛 Autism support is not about changing who a child is. It is about understanding their individual way of experiencing the world and helping them build skills, confidence and meaningful connections through approaches that work for them.

Sometimes we forget just how much children listen — even when we think they’re busy playing, colouring, or doing their own thing.

Words like “anxiety,” “stress,” “trauma,” “overwhelmed,” “behavioural issues” and other adult/medical language can become labels in a child’s mind when they hear them repeatedly, especially when those words are used to describe them.

Instead of saying:
🗣️ “She has anxiety.”
Try:
💬 “She’s feeling worried right now.”

Instead of:
🗣️ “He’s very emotional.”
Try:
💬 “He’s having some big feelings today.”

Instead of:
🗣️ “He can’t cope with change.”
Try:
💬 “Changes can feel hard for him, so let’s help him through it.”

We’re not saying you should hide emotions or avoid important conversations with children. ❤️

Quite the opposite — talk about feelings openly. Help children understand what they are feeling, why they might be feeling it, and what they can do with those feelings.

The goal is to give children language for their emotions, not labels for their identity.

Because there’s a big difference between:

👉 “I am anxious.”

and

👉 “I am feeling worried right now.”

One can become an identity.
The other is an emotion that can come and go. 🌱

So next time you’re talking about your child — especially when they’re within earshot — pause and think:

“Am I describing what they’re experiencing, or am I defining who they are?”

That little shift in language can make a BIG difference. 💛

Little masterpiece, big imagination. 🥰🎨

A simple stick person, but filled with a child’s creativity, connection, and way of seeing the world. 💛✨

Every drawing tells a story.

💛 Seeing the world through different eyes 💛

Today we explored how the same shape can look different to everyone. What looks like a circle to one person may look like a diamond to another — and that’s the beauty of our unique perspectives. ✨

Through play, we practised understanding others, sharing our ideas, listening, and building the social skills that help us connect with the people around us. 🌈

Meet Tucker the Turtle! 🐢💚

Tucker the Turtle is a simple and effective technique that helps children learn how to manage overwhelming emotions. Just like a turtle retreats into its shell when it feels unsafe or overwhelmed, children are encouraged to “tuck in” by pausing, taking deep breaths, and finding a safe, calm space.

This strategy teaches children that it’s okay to step away when emotions become too big. Once they feel calmer, they can come back, express their feelings, and work through challenges with confidence.

At Lotus Mind Play Therapy, we use play-based strategies like Tucker the Turtle to help children build emotional regulation, resilience, and lifelong coping skills—one small step at a time. 💚

When we talk with children—not just to them—we help them feel seen, heard, and valued. Every conversation builds their language, strengthens their confidence, supports emotional regulation, and teaches them that their thoughts and feelings matter.

Children may not remember every toy they had, but they will remember how you made them feel. Slow down, listen, ask questions, and make space for their little voices. Those everyday conversations are building the foundation for a lifetime of connection.

🪷 At Lotus Mind Play Therapy, we believe that meaningful conversations create confident, resilient children.
