Today is World Brain Tumour Day.
My mum passed away from glioblastoma, an aggressive and currently incurable form of brain cancer, on 4th April 2024.
My husband’s brother also passed away from brain cancer in his 20s.
Yesterday, the incredible Professor Richard Scolyer passed away from glioblastoma, the same type of brain cancer my mum had. While his loss is deeply felt, so too is the legacy he leaves behind. Through his courage, openness, and groundbreaking research, he helped bring greater awareness to brain cancer and contributed knowledge that may help future patients and families facing this devastating diagnosis.
His passing has reminded me just how devastating brain cancer is, and how many families have been touched by it.
Watching my mum go through glioblastoma was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but it also taught me so much about courage, love, and what truly matters.
Yesterday was also my 40th birthday. While it was a beautiful day spent with people I love, it didn’t feel quite right without my mum. There are some milestones that just aren’t the same without the people you wish you could share them with.
Today I’m thinking of everyone affected by brain cancer, patients, families, carers, friends, and those who are no longer here.
But mostly, I’m thinking of my mum. 🩶
