Can you believe how much has changed since the 1980s? Autism was once reported at around 1 in 10,000 children. Today, the figure is around 1 in 28.

Whatever we make of those numbers, that is a profound change—and it raises important questions.

“The message that parents are getting about autism is it’s genetic. That is the belief. Therefore, if you get autism, a) you couldn’t do anything about it because it’s genetic, and b) we have no treatment for it, so you just have to accept it. I think in this day and age that is a pretty poor show.”

Sometimes, the reason may not be psychological at all. Your physical health can influence how you feel, including symptoms of anxiety.
