Sometimes people come to counselling later in life and say:
“I thought I had dealt with this years ago.”
And maybe they had.
But ageing brings change. Retirement, changes in health, grief, loss, caring for others, changes in relationships and even having more time to think can shift the way we see our past.
Experiences that once felt packed away can suddenly feel much closer.
This doesn’t necessarily mean they were never processed. It can simply mean that you are looking at them from a different stage of life, with different experiences, different losses and a different understanding of yourself.
Sometimes we need to revisit an old experience because we are not the same person who first lived through it.
At NDC, we see counselling later in life as an opportunity to make sense of the whole story. Not to live in the past, but to understand how it continues to sit alongside who you are today.
If you need space to process something thats come back up again, reach out today.
