Sometimes people come to counselling later in life and say:

“I thought I had dealt with this years ago.”

And maybe they had.

But ageing brings change. Retirement, changes in health, grief, loss, caring for others, changes in relationships and even having more time to think can shift the way we see our past.

Experiences that once felt packed away can suddenly feel much closer.

This doesn’t necessarily mean they were never processed. It can simply mean that you are looking at them from a different stage of life, with different experiences, different losses and a different understanding of yourself.

Sometimes we need to revisit an old experience because we are not the same person who first lived through it.

At NDC, we see counselling later in life as an opportunity to make sense of the whole story. Not to live in the past, but to understand how it continues to sit alongside who you are today.

If you need space to process something thats come back up again, reach out today.

“I can’t talk to my friends about this.”

“I don’t want to worry my family.”

“I feel like I’m burdening everyone.”

We hear these words often.

Sometimes you can be surrounded by people who love you and still feel incredibly alone.

You might worry about being judged. You might not want to upset anyone. You might feel like you’ve already talked about it too much. Or perhaps what you’re carrying feels too complicated to explain.

That’s where counselling can be different.

You don’t have to protect us from how you’re feeling. You don’t have to worry that you’re burdening us. And you don’t need to have the right words. We help you unpack it… all.

Sometimes, you simply need a safe person and a safe space and then time to process what has been impossible, hard, overwhelming and confusing to cope with.

At Next Door Counselling we are known for support that feels familar, welcoming and safe.

🌿 Have you heard of Forest Therapy?

Forest Therapy isn’t hiking or exercise. It’s the gentle practice of slowing down and reconnecting with nature in a mindful, intentional way.

Research has shown that spending time in nature can help:
💚 Reduce stress and anxiety
🌿 Improve mood and mental wellbeing
🍃 Increase calm and focus
✨ Restore a sense of connection with yourself and the world around you

At Next Door Counselling & Consultation, we’re excited to explore bringing Forest Therapy experiences to the Mornington Peninsula.

Our Mental Health & Wellbeing Practitioner, Renee, has studied Forest Therapy and is passionate about combining mental health support with the healing benefits of nature. She looks forward to creating gentle, welcoming experiences where people can pause, breathe and reconnect.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, we’d love for you to follow along as we share updates and announce our first Forest Therapy experiences.

🍃 Sometimes the best therapy begins with a walk among the trees.

Many survivors of institutional abuse are now adults and seniors, carrying the effects of trauma that may have remained with them for decades. For many, these experiences have shaped relationships, self-worth, trust and emotional wellbeing throughout their lives.

At Next Door Counselling & Consultation, it is our privilege to support adults and seniors with their mental health through compassionate, trauma-informed psychological care. Becoming an approved provider under the Victorian Redress Scheme felt like a natural extension of the work we already do every day.

We are honoured to announce that Next Door Counselling & Consultation is now an approved provider of psychological support under the Victorian Redress Scheme.

If you or someone you support has been approved for psychological support through the Victorian Redress Scheme, we welcome referrals and are committed to providing a safe, respectful and person-centred space where healing can occur at your own pace.

Because no one should have to carry the weight of the past alone.

The other day, I heard a comment that stayed with me.

“Hannah, I’m entering the sunset years of life.”

It was not said with sadness or fear. Instead there was a simple and calm acceptance.

We smiled together because it felt so much gentler than the language we often hear around ageing.

So many people fear getting older. We worry about what we might lose, rather than what we still have.

Perhaps the sunset years aren’t about endings at all.

Perhaps they’re about a quieter pace. More time to notice the little things. Deeper conversations. Less rushing. More presence.

🌅 Ageing is a life transition that can be assisted with counselling. If you want a space to talk things through, Renee and I are here and available.

I have the privilege of sitting with many of you who are living with ambiguous grief.

It is one of the reasons I’m travelling to Queensland in August to speak with health and community professionals from across Australia and New Zealand about this often-overlooked experience.

Every week, I hear words like these:

“I never wanted to become a carer.”

“I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

“There doesn’t seem to be any room for me.”

“I feel guilty for even feeling this way because they’re still here.”

And each time, I find myself saying the same thing…

You are not failing. You are grieving.

No one has stopped to tell you that what you’re experiencing has a name.

It is ambiguous grief.

It is the grief of loving someone who is still physically here, while slowly losing the relationship you once knew. It is grieving the future you imagined, the roles that have changed, and the parts of yourself that have quietly disappeared along the way.

This kind of grief is confusing because there is no funeral, no clear ending and often very little acknowledgement from the world around you.

My hope is that by bringing ambiguous grief into conversations with clinicians across Australia and New Zealand, more carers and families will hear the words they have needed all along:

“What you’re feeling is normal. You’re not alone. And you deserve support too.”

Today I’m celebrating another birthday- they seem to arrive quicker each year that passes!

This little collection is a snapshot of the things that bring me joy… handpicked flowers, a hand-painted banksia (my favourite), coffee with my favourite person, and of course, a cup of tiramisu.

Thank you to my family, friends, clients, colleagues and everyone who has supported me and NDC this past year. Your kindness, encouragement and trust mean more than you know.

I feel incredibly privileged to do work I genuinely love and to walk alongside so many wonderful people.

Here’s to another year of growth, connection, slowing down to appreciate life’s simple moments and making a small difference where I can.

And for anyone wondering… the award for funniest birthday gift goes to my daughter, who gave me a back scratcher. 😂 Safe to say it got a good laugh!

Thank you for being part of my journey,
Hannah
