“I’m a failure.”
“I should be better at this by now!”
“Everyone else finds it easy; why is it so difficult for me?”
Sound familiar?
When I’m learning something new or trying to change a habit, I sometimes find myself having thoughts like these. Instead of being motivating, this self-criticism usually pulls me into shame and stops me in my tracks: “I’m a failure so I might as well stop trying.”
When I’m being kind to myself, however, I remember that it takes time and patience to learn new skills and change old patterns and habits. When I’m being kind to myself, I celebrate every ‘baby step’, which gives me the momentum I need to stay on my new path.
