It looks like play. But the brain is doing some serious work. 🧠
When a child is completing a puzzle or problem-solving activity, they’re practising much more than the task in front of them.
They’re using executive function, the mental skills that help us:
🎯 focus our attention
🧩 plan and problem-solve
🔄 shift strategies when something isn’t working
🧠 hold information in mind
⏸️ pause before responding
💭 make decisions
🌱 persist when something feels challenging
These skills develop through practice and experience.
That’s why our Activation & Regulation Sessions aren’t simply about keeping children active.
We intentionally combine movement, cognitive challenges and regulation to create opportunities for children to practise these skills in a supported environment.
A child might be moving one minute, solving a challenge the next, then learning how to pause, breathe and reset.
Activate. Think. Adapt. Regulate. Try again.
That’s the difference between simply keeping a child busy and intentionally creating experiences that build capacity.
At Youphoria, we’re interested in what’s happening underneath the behaviour and how we can help children develop the skills to respond differently over time.
This is the foundation of our Activation & Regulation methodology and the work we do here at Youphoria.
Because sometimes the biggest developmental work happens when children are simply given the opportunity to play, move, think and try again.
