When Riley was born at John Hunter Hospital in February 2010, he arrived just before 30 weeks and weighed just 1,252 grams.

For his parents, becoming first-time parents and starting their journey in the NICU was a scary time. But they felt supported every step of the way by the incredible team.

Riley showed his strength from day one. He was able to breathe on his own and spent five weeks in NICU growing bigger and stronger before heading home.

Now, 16 years later, Riley has just celebrated his birthday and is 6 feet tall. You would never know how small he started.

Thank you to Riley and his family for sharing this special journey and showing us just how far our little patients can go. 💛

Grant winner! 🎉🔬💙

Paediatric Respiratory physician Dr Geshani Jayasuriya has been awarded a 2026 Newcastle Permanent Innovator Fellowship, securing $100,000 to help turn medical research into life-saving solutions.

Dr Geshani was recognised for her work developing safer, radiation-free lung scans that could transform how airway disease is monitored in children and adults across all stages of life.💙♥️

Delivered in partnership with Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Newcastle Permanent, the Innovators Program supports six early and mid-career researchers from across our District, The University of Newcastle, Australia and HMRI to develop practical solutions to real healthcare challenges. The winners were announced at today's Pitch Showcase, where they impressed judges with their research and innovative ideas that have the potential to deliver real-world benefits for our community.

Congratulations Dr Geshani on this incredible achievement.

Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week

This World Breastfeeding Week, we're highlighting the support, education and resources available to help families feel confident and informed throughout their feeding journey.

The World Breastfeeding Week stall at John Hunter Hospital provided an opportunity for patients, families and staff to meet our team, learn about breastfeeding support services, and explore the education available before and after the arrival of their baby.

Meet some of our team:
Aimee is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), who provides antenatal and breastfeeding education through the John Hunter Hospital Maternity and Gynaecology team.

Julianne and Elizabeth, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), who have supported breastfeeding families at John Hunter Hospital for almost 20 years. They provide specialist lactation support on the postnatal ward and across the hospital, and deliver breastfeeding education as part of our parenting education team.

Breastfeeding education equips parents with knowledge, practical skills and confidence to navigate the early days with their baby and connect with support when they need it.
