What a really insightful event on Friday about carers leave and return to work plans.

I loved sitting with friends from CareerLinks Sarah Gamble and Veronica Matheson.

They were there with a lens of supporting young women entering and being in predominantly male dominated industries.

I was there with a women’s mental health lens, learning how the construction industry is having effective discussions about female health that can affect a persons work, specifically pregnancy and carers leave.

Thanks to the panel Ashley Barnes Emma Walsh Clea Smith Dane Bates who really worked through what good leadership and workplaces need to do for all genders to feel comfortable having discussions and plans for pregnancy and carers leave, and the real possibility of bereavement leave.

It was really comforting to hear that the language I talk about using in my courses, is the same identified as powerful by leaders.

That women need to feel safe to disclose pregnancy and possible complications, their journey with it, to ask about their options for leave and be a part of that planning, as well as a return to work plan should they want it. To also be inclusive that this is also the case for all genders and definitions of what a family can look like.

One panelist re-iterated something I always talk about - leaders asking the person how you can best help them, and to just SHSHSH and listen. Far too often we give advice or options but if we ask the person they may know what will work for them.

It was refreshing to hear about large organisations doing person centred plans. To hear of wrap around supports put in place. To really recognise that staff retention needs to be addressed in certain industries, and this is an area where people tend to leave their positions, so it needs to be better.

The afternoon was complete with whales showing off not far from shore- what a fabulous outlook from the conference room at NOAH'S on the beach.

Mental Health First Aid courses give people skills and knowledge to help others in their professional and personal lives.
Everyone should be adding this to their resume just like physical first aid course is.

I feel the need to share places that are doing a great job at catering for the growing number of people who, for whatever reason, don't drink.

Jordy Hubbard at the Rydges Newcastle has staff who will ask you what you feel like and make something to suit.
Modus Brewing do a range of no alcohol Plus Minus wines and mocktails.
The Prince of Merewether do a range of mocktails - Blueberry crumble is my fave.
St Lucia Dining in Honeysuckle do a cocktail in a ceramic looking coconut - how fun!
The Mary Ellen in Merewether has wee bottles of no alcohol wine - thank you.

In Sydney, Brisbane and Perth recently I had some absolutely incredible choices. And not just one mocktail on the menu, but a range of options that were really different. Have a look at the photos.

Newcastle establishments are getting better as they realise that there is a growing trend of people who can't or don't drink, and that these people want more than a glass of juice or soft drink from a mixer gun. That people like me are willing to pay good money for it.

As always there is room for improvement - A single mocktail can't be the only option. There needs to be more choice of no alcohol wines. There is also a growing number of craft no alcohol spirits and experimental sodas on the market. Let's see more of them. Let's see bar tenders getting creative more.

More people are realising alcohol is a substance that can cause great pain in people's lives, family's and in communities. That there are so many things detrimental to physical and mental health. More people are choosing sobriety. It's a beautiful thing, so let's support them by giving more fabulous options for drinks out!

I am so proud of this amazing human for opening the Yoga Shala on Darby Street in Newcastle last weekend. What gorgeous spaces filled with amazing people.

For Brooke it’s all about community and we are aligned on that.
Connection and community are what makes a place like this feel so good.
Connection and community is where healing happens and souls are nurtured and people feel supported.

We are both instructors and also learners. Both in the mental health space. Physical and mental health go together.
We both have different career paths, but both with similar goals. To guide people to help themselves and others.

I may see some of you there - you should think yoga, pilates, wellness. All done with soft lush and decadent furnishings. It’s so incredibly beautiful and zen and empowering.
