Before we ask someone to reflect, learn, regulate or change it's important to consider whether they feel safe enough to do so 🤗

Emotional safety can look different for everyone - it might involve feeling heard, having predictability, being given space, knowing what to expect or having someone respond without judgement.

Take time to create a plan for your own, or someone you're supporting's, individual needs to help stay well and able to continue growing 🌱

Today is World Mental Health Day 💜

Mental wellbeing is also shaped by the everyday things around us:
👋Connection
🌱Rest and recovery
🏠Feeling safe
⏲Routines that work for us
💬Being able to communicate our needs
🤔Understanding our emotions
🤝Knowing when and how to ask for support

We don't have to wait until things become overwhelming before seeking support. Early support can help people understand what they're experiencing, build strategies that work for them and identify what they need.

There isn't one version of good mental health — and there isn't one type of support that works for everyone.

Mental health is everyday health.

R U OK? Day is one day. The conversation shouldn’t be. 💛

September 10th is a reminder to check in with the people around us, but meaningful conversations about mental health can happen all year round.

Checking in doesn’t have to end with one conversation.

Asking “Are you OK?” can open the door. Continuing to show up can help keep it open. 🌱

At One Step Ahead, we value thoughtful, ethical and person centred behaviour support. Our work is neuro-affirming, relationship based and focused on dignity, quality of life and practical support that makes sense in real life.

We’re currently looking for Proficient, Advanced or Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioners to join our team as subcontractors, with a starting caseload available around the Penrith and Blacktown areas.
This opportunity may suit a practitioner who enjoys flexible subcontractor work, while still having connection to a supportive clinical team, admin support, templates, systems and group case discussions.

Applicants will need current PBS practitioner suitability at Proficient level or above, an ABN, relevant insurance, NDIS Worker Screening Check and WWCC.
We’re happy to have an initial 15 minute chat to see whether the opportunity feels like the right fit before progressing to our interview process.

Not based in the Penrith or Western Sydney area but still interested? Please get in touch, as we’re open to speaking with practitioners who may be a good fit for our team.

To express interest or request further information, please email [email protected].

💛 Today is R U OK? Day 💛

A simple question can make a powerful difference.

We believe in creating safe spaces for people of all ages and needs to feel heard, understood, and supported. R U OK? Day is a reminder to check in with compassion, curiosity, and without pressure.

Whether it’s a child struggling to express big emotions, a teen masking their overwhelm, or a colleague feeling disconnected—asking “Are you OK?” and being ready to truly listen can open the door to real connection and support.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be there. 💛

Let’s keep the conversation going, today and every day.

Not everyone communicates through words💬

It’s important to look beyond what communication looks like, and consider what a person may be trying to tell you.

Changes in behaviour can tell us someone is..
🌿Needing space or overwhelmed
😫Struggling to process a difficult situation
👭Trying to connect with peers
💔Experiencing emotional or sensory distress
✋Setting a boundary or preference
🆘Asking for help or needing a break

It’s important to pause before making assumptions and consider a person’s environment and individual communication style. All communication deserves to be respected and listened to 💜

School can feel overwhelming sometimes. Social demands, busy environments and unexpected changes or transitions can affect our ability to feel regulated and ready to learn.

Understanding what may be happening under the surface and using different regulation strategies can better position them to learn, participate and engage at school.

We've put together some small changes that could become part of a child's classroom and school experience.

Taking 5 minutes to consider some of this strategies can make all the difference to a child’s sense of safety and belonging 💜

You belong here. You are worthy of respect. You deserve to feel safe.

For LGBTQIA+ young people, feeling safe can mean more than physical safety. It can mean being respected, listened to and accepted without feeling like they need to hide or minimise who they are.

Wear purple on the 28th August to support safe spaces for young LGBTQIA+ people 💜

Behaviour is information. It's one part of the story - not the whole story 💜

What may look like “non-compliance” on the surface may be a person who is trying to communicate something that is affecting them. It’s important to ask yourself “What is happening to this person right now?”

There are 3 key factors to consider - Context, Regulation and Communication. We've outlined why these components are important to consider and how you can apply this thinking to everyday support.

When we understand the person, not just the behaviour, we can begin to develop more supportive and meaningful strategies 💫
