Scooter board + blowing = so much more than just fun! 💨🛴
This simple OT activity works on a range of important developmental skills at once:
✨ Postural strength – Lying on the tummy helps strengthen the muscles needed for sitting, handwriting and overall endurance.
✨ Sensory regulation – The movement from the scooter board provides calming vestibular and proprioceptive input, helping children feel more organised and ready to learn.
✨ Breath control – Blowing a cotton ball strengthens the muscles used for speech, feeding and breathing control.
✨ Visual tracking – Following the cotton ball with their eyes supports reading and coordination skills.
✨ Motor planning & coordination – Children learn to move their bodies while controlling their breathing to achieve a goal.
✨ Attention & focus – A fun challenge that encourages sustained concentration and problem-solving.
The best part? Kids just think they’re playing! 🌈
Play is powerful, and every activity has a purpose. 💛

Smoko break, but you’re two paediatric OTs who don’t smoke and rarely catch a break 😅🫧
So naturally… bubble smoko it is!

Come pack my OTA bag with me! 👜✨

Sharing some of my favourite resources for supporting sensory regulation, body awareness and engagement through play.
These resources also help target fine motor skills, visual-motor coordination, balance and motor planning.

Some of my other must haves are:
- Lycra tunnel
- scooter board
And bubbles!! 🫧

Turning therapy goals into fun experiences 💜🌈✨

Community access: transforming practiced skills into functional independence 🙌🏻💪✨

As OTs we love watching the skills we practice in therapy translate into everyday life.
Whether it’s catching the bus to school, walking to the shops or buying groceries, community access involves a mix of foundational skills that are essential to participation and independence in everyday activities.

🌟 Activity of the Week: Zoom Ball! 🌟

This simple activity packs a huge developmental punch! 🎯

Using a Zoom Ball encourages children to develop:
✨ Bilateral coordination
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Shoulder and core stability
✨ Grip strength/force modulation
✨ Postural control
✨ Timing and sequencing
✨ Motor planning
✨ Visual convergence/divergence
✨ Impulse control
✨ Teamwork and communication

By keeping the body active while coordinating both hands together, children are strengthening the foundations needed for everyday skills such as handwriting, ball sports, dressing, and classroom participation.

🔼 Grade it Up

• Complete the activity standing on a BOSU or wobble cushion to challenge balance and postural control.
• Perform it while lying on the tummy (prone) to increase shoulder stability and upper body strength.
• Add cognitive challenges such as naming categories, spelling words, or counting backwards while playing.
• Increase the speed or vary the distance between players.

🔽 Grade it Down

• Play seated on the floor or in a chair for extra stability.
• Reduce the distance between players.
• Slow the pace to allow more time for motor planning.
• Secure one end of the Zoom Ball to a pole, fence or higher fixed structure, allowing a child to practise independently while focusing on timing and bilateral coordination.

💡 A versatile activity that’s easy to adapt to suit every child’s goals and skill level!

✨Stereogenosis✨
An amazing skills which allows you to identify objects using only touch. It plays a key role in fine motor skill development, motor planning, body awareness and tactile processing and is essential for functional tasks like buttoning clothes, zipping up a jacket and searching for items in a backpack.

Try this activity to target stereognosis while also incorporating tactile sensory input, discrimination, impulse control, fine motor manipulation and persistence.
📋What you need:
Plastic container filled with rice (or filling of your choice)
Pairs of small items
Blindfold if needed!

How to do it:
1. Lay out all the items in front of your child
2.Hide one of each in the container before mixing it up
3. Have your child pick up first item, look and feel for the size, shape, texture and weight
4. With eyes closed/blindfolded and using their hands only, have your child try to locate each item, taking their time to feel for the correct one
5. Once they have picked the item, have them open their eyes to check their answer!

💡Upgrade, downgrade or modify the activity by:
Filling the container with pom-poms, shaving cream or jelly

Body socks can provide deep pressure input, support body awareness, and help kids feel more regulated through movement and play’

Balance doesn’t have to be boring!

A simple balance beam can become an exciting therapy challenge with just a few fun additions! ✨

In this activity, our little learner walks across the balance beam, uses tweezers/pegs to pick up pom poms (or “rubbish”) and carries them to the Bluey garbage truck to sort and dump!

While it looks like play, we’re working on so many important skills:
- ⚖️ Balance & postural control
- 🤏 Fine motor strength and grasp
- 👀 Hand-eye coordination
- 👐 Bilateral coordination & motor planning
- 🧠 Attention and concentration
- 🌿 Regulation through movement
- 💪🏼 Core stability and body awareness

Want to increase the challenge or provide even more sensory input?
- Add ankle weights for extra proprioceptive feedback
- Play music in the background
- Turn it into a timed challenge
- Add different movement patterns (tiptoes, side steps, backwards walking)

When therapy feels like a game, children are often more motivated, engaged and willing to practise those important skills.

P.s this soft balance beam can be found at big w stores!
