PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS REMEMBRANCE DAY
Today, for so many families marks one of unimaginable heartbreak, longing and loss. We, like thousands of Australian families are crippled by grief on days like these. Each milestone, anniversary and major event is a reminder of what could have been and what we have lost - saying goodbye to our precious babies all too soon.
I am only at the beginning of this journey so I certainly am no expert nor do I have it all figured out but one thing that I am certain of is this… Grief will never leave you, it is a part of you, your story and who you are. This grief however, will slowly become lighter, not because it is going away, not because you are “moving on” and not because you have forgotten. In surviving and continuing on, you are becoming stronger and you are able to carry your grief a little easier with every step forward and with each new day.
For us, we have had to try to make sense and meaning of this all while supporting our little kids and helping them to navigate their own sense of grief in a way that they could understand. This book has been such an important part of this journey for us as a family and will forever be cherished, loved and admired (even so much so that it has inspired a book week costume!) It was given to us by one of our beautiful perinatal loss nurses at the Mater when our little girl passed away last year. It is equally poignant and beautiful. It depicts loss through a child’s eyes and gently holds space for them to understand what has happened all while allowing them to still feel a sense of connection and love.
If you are navigating this journey or know of someone who is, this book may help (adults and children alike) - we would love to share it with you.
Written by Rory Mather and illustrated by Matt Shanks, this is My Little Star. Read by my little girl.
Sending love and strength,

P.S. to our darling little Alchemy angels in heaven - Pippa and Flossy, we love you.
