Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op We are here to support and politically advocate for the Aboriginal community in the Geelong and wider region.

We meet the needs of our community by providing culturally appropriate, quality services and programs which promote sustainable economic growth, political stability, health and well-being and environmental care that is respectful of Aboriginal culture. The Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative acknowledges and accepts its responsibilities to the community in providing increased opportunities for soci

al and economic advancement. We aim to have the Co-operative function in a way that will enable us to build and strengthen the social, cultural, economic, environmental and spiritual foundations of our community. We advocate for our community on issues which affect their lives and operate in a way that ensures the rights of our people are upheld. We work toward broader collaboration and maintaining partnerships with external stakeholders to ensure informed policy, program directions and service access and responsiveness. We represent community needs and interests in all of our dealings; this is the pure essence of community control.

Homelessness Australia coordinates Homelessness Week each year to build community support and drive government action to end homelessness.

This week (3-9th August) is Homelessness Week - and community sector agencies and community groups across Victoria are folding over 60,000 origami houses to highlight the scale of Victoria’s homelessness crisis.

The 60,000 houses represents the number of households who are on the Victorian Housing Register needing public or community housing now.

The Barwon Homelessness Network is holding an exhibition at Geelong central library and Biyal’a (Armstrong Creek) libraries this week, with more than 660 origami houses displayed, representing the 10% of public and community homes needed now for households across the Barwon region.

Every Monday we start the working week at Wathaurong with a smoking ceremony to help ground us, connect to country, and reflect on what is important to us this week.

The Geelong Cats have opened an Expression of Interest (EOI) to First Nations artists, creatives and community members to help shape the next design of the 2027 First Nations jumper that will be worn during AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round and the AFLW Indigenous Round. By opening the process to community, the Cats aim to deepen cultural connection, elevate diverse voices, and create a jumper that reflects both the club’s long-standing history and the living cultural strength of First Nations people.

Embedding Culture in the Workplace

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative invites local Geelong businesses to take part in this free opportunity to learn how to meaningfully embed culture within the workplace.

When: Friday 31st July
Time: 9:30am - 3:30pm
Where: Booln Booln Cultural Centre (410 Surf Coast HWY, Grovedale)

This workshop offers valuable education and insight into:

• Local Aboriginal history and culture
• Best practices for cultural respect and engagement
• Building genuine partnerships with Aboriginal organisations and services
• Practical ways to embed cultural respect into everyday business operations

Enjoy a catered lunch while connecting, learning and growing your understanding in a supportive environment.

Come through for a relaxed arfternoon of art, yarns and connection. Whether you’re keen to try something new or just want a space to sit and create, everyone’s welcome.

Materials are provided, or bring along your own project if you’re already working on something.

This space is all about connection, to community, culture and creativity, supporting a stronger sense of belonging, identity, self-awareness and healing.

On Monday, 27 July 2026 at 2pm, a national test alert will be sent to mobile devices across Australia and will last for approximately 10 seconds.

The alert may be received on most mobile phones, as well as some smart watches and tablets. Devices that receive the test message will vibrate and emit a loud siren-like sound for around 10 seconds.

If receiving the alert could be disruptive or cause you or someone you care about to feel unsafe, please consider turning off your mobile devices or placing them in aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your area.

To avoid receiving the alert, keep devices turned off or in aeroplane mode for at least one hour after the test begins.

Please note that the test alert will sound even if your device is set to silent or Do Not Disturb mode.
