VIETNAM VETERANS’ DAY | 18 AUGUST

Today commemorates 60 years since one of the most defining battles for the Australians in Vietnam.

108 men from D Coy, 6 RAR (105) and NZ 161 Field Battery FOs (3) and later were reinforced by more from 6RAR, APCs and RAAF supporting ammo drops, faced an enemy force of 1500 - 2500 Viet Cong fighters. By the end of the battle we had lost 17 on the battle field; and another succumb to his wounds a few days later, and 24 were wounded. 3 Viet Cong/North Vietnamese were captured, an estimated 245 died and 350 - 500 were wounded. The numbers are horrendous for all, and we do not 'celebrate'.

What we do however is commemorate the bravery and we try to empathise with the fear, adrenaline and sheer horror those who were there, and all those who served in Vietnam endured.

When our men and women returned from Vietnam, they were lepers and made to feel ashamed. THAT was a greater wound than many who served and were wounded by the enemy! Australia should still apologise for this miscarriage.....

SO TODAY, to all those who served in Vietnam, and all those who have loved and supported you - THANK YOU, and KNOW that here at Doc Kerry's Clinic, we recognise you and your service.

Lest We Forget.

As many may know, today at 1400h (2pm for the unindoctrinated), the Australian Government is trialling the AusAlert system. It will alarm on all tablets, smart watches and mobile phones. The systems purpose is to let people in areas of danger KNOW and give advice to prepare to or actually evacuate or other such information. This is on the background of the inquiry into Black Sunday fires in Victoria where many needlessly died.

NOW some may have a phone that they secrete somewhere for their own personal safety. If this applies to you - turn it off, or place on airplane mode as it will override all DND or silent settings.

Now watch me jump out of my skin at 1400h! hmmm

I know many of my Veterans are not impressed with the proposed $5000 cap to allied health services. I KNOW it is causing a great deal of distress. I'm not much into political 'support' but maybe we should engage with those who want to bring about change and have set up a measure to do so........
I will just leave this here

Mental Health and Su***de is an issue in our communities.
We have a tendency to put up a brave front and not talk about it - which leads to further isolation and poorer health in general.
Triple M are doing their No Talk Day - so that YOU can!
Know there are people you can talk to - before you get so far down the spiral and self destruction. Reach out to your mates. Reach out to your counsellors and Psychologists; and please reach out to your GP Specialists.

Doc Kerry's Clinic is a strong supporter of these initiatives because they do get people talking - even if to say it doesn't apply to them, but it MIGHT to another.

Men - Start talking - to anyone!

01 July - the Birthday of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (1902)! 🚑🎂🩺
Since the beginning, RAAMC (along with RAANC) have been present providing support to nearly all major Army exercises and operations. This started even before they were formally RAAMC in the the Boer War (1899-1902); where the first Australian was awarded a VC —> Sir Neville Howse VC!
RAAMC has been there since then all the way through to least year with Operation Render Safe whereby members of 3rd Close Health Battalion deployed to Papua New Guinea to provide vital health support for ADF personnel clearing World War II unexploded ordnance.
Today is also especially poignant for the RAAMC as the first non-Arms Corps, and first female RSM-A, after formally being appointed on 01 July 2022, will hand over her appointment later this month to WO1 Brad Doyle, OAM.
Warrant Officer Kim Felmingham NSC, OAM was RAAMC for some decades before reaching the level where she no longer wore her RAAMC hat badge.
‘Paulatim’ - little by little.

I had some input to the development of this resource - please spread far and wide. Veterans are a poorly recognised vulnerable group - as are their families.

Veterans bring resilience, leadership, and strong life experience from their service, and may also present with unique, service-related mental health challenges.

The GPMHSC has a practical resource to support GPs in recognising these presentations and connecting veterans with the right support – including referral pathways to specialist services.

Today we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Blackhawk accident that took the lives of 18 Australian Army members - 15 being from Special Air Service Regiment and 3 from 5th Aviation Regiment. These two units are forever bound because of this tragedy. The community will always be affected. Doc Kerry's Clinic will always honour them and today Doc Kerry moved the poppy that rests on the MRH90 picture to the Blackhawk, where it will stay until 28th Jul.

We WILL remember them

I did not have the honour to serve overseas with these gentlemen, but I interact regularly with many who did - and one of our own in particular (you know who you are and I will raise a glass on your behalf today).
I know their faces and I know their stories through those who have served with them and those of us who refuse to allow their stories to go untold. I know the faces of so many who I've never met, but I will ensure they are NEVER forgotten. They died facing the foe - and I, along with many others, will ensure they live facing the Australian public for whom they served.
