Attending the Australian Islamic Medical Association conference this week was a powerful reminder: faith and culture are never separate from mental health — they're woven through how people understand suffering, healing, and hope.

Cultural safety isn't about becoming an expert in every faith or culture. It's about staying curious, asking respectfully, and letting the client remain the expert on their own life and values.

That's where real trust — and real healing — begins.

You may not be repeating the same pattern. You may be stuck in a trauma loop.

Have you ever found yourself:

• Choosing the same kind of unhealthy relationship?
• Repeating behaviours you promised yourself you would stop?
• Feeling drawn to people or situations that hurt you?
• Reacting in the same way, even when you know the outcome?
• Asking yourself, “Why do I keep doing this?”

Sometimes, what looks like a poor choice or a repeated pattern is actually your nervous system returning to what feels familiar, rather than what is necessarily healthy.

Trauma loops can keep us cycling through familiar thoughts, emotions, behaviours and relationship dynamics—often in an unconscious attempt to resolve, control, or protect ourselves from an old wound.

This is why simply telling yourself “I need to stop” may not be enough.

The first step is not self-blame. It is awareness.

Notice the pattern.
Understand what triggers it.
Recognise what your nervous system is trying to protect you from.
And begin creating a different response.

You are not broken.

Your brain and nervous system may simply be repeating an old survival strategy that once made sense.

Healing begins when we stop judging the pattern and start understanding it.

Being a psychologist is a privilege—but it also comes with an immense responsibility.

People often think as if therapy
means having just a vinversation. But they don’t see the constant attunement happening beneath the surface.

🫀Every word, every pause, every question, and every intervention requires careful thought.

We are listening not only to what is being said, but also to what is communicated through silence, emotion, and non-verbal cues.

🫀Working with complex trauma, grief, PTSD, deep rooted fears, helplessness, hopeless and deep emotional pain requires more than clinical knowledge.

🫀It requires sensitivity, presence, and an ongoing awareness of client’s verbal and non verbal communication and how best we can respond verbally and non verbally. Also making sure that our own values and biases never overshadow the client’s unique experiences.

🫀 I often think of therapy as holding someone’s heart in your hands—not a heart protected by anaesthesia, but one that is awake, beating, carrying pain, hurt, trauma, and hope.

🧠🫀Every interaction has the potential to either strengthen a person’s sense of safety or unintentionally reinforce old wounds.

That is why psychological work demands such care. It can be emotionally demanding, but it is also one of the greatest privileges to witness people heal, grow, and reconnect with themselves.

🫀❤️🧠To everyone working in the helping professions—thank you for holding people’s hearts with compassion, courage, and care.

Throwback to one of my favourite professional learning experiences.

Looking back at an incredible seven-day EMDR Masterclass with Roger Solomon in March 2025, where we explored EMDR, Structural Dissociation, and Parts Work in depth.

As clinicians, we never stop learning. Some trainings stay with us long after they end, continuing to shape how we think, formulate cases, and support our clients. This was certainly one of those experiences for me.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from Roger Solomon and to have shared the week with such a passionate group of mental health professionals. The knowledge, discussions, and connections made during those seven days continue to influence my clinical work today.

Here’s to lifelong learning and continually striving to provide the best care for those we work with.
