RSL LifeCare is a charitable organisation that was formed in 1911 to provide care and service to war veterans. Services were initially provided at Bare Island, Botany Bay, until moving to Narrabeen in 1939. From small beginnings providing care and service to just a handful of war veterans, the organisation has grown to be one of the largest senior living services in Australia. Caring for 7,000 people across independent living, community care, assisted living, dementia and nursing home, we have developed an extensive range of services that fosters independence and provides social, clinical, emotional and spiritual support. Despite our growth and the passage of time, RSL LifeCare remains true to its original aim and mission – to provide a home of peace and security to senior Australians.

It was a pleasure to welcome The Hon. David Harris MP, NSW Minister for Veterans, and his team to RSL ANZAC Village and the Northern Beaches Veteran Wellbeing Centre today, together with Caroline Mackaness, Director from the NSW Office of Veterans Affairs.

RSL LifeCare Chair Sangeeta Venkatesan and Chief Executive Officer Drew Pearce led a tour of RSL ANZAC Village, showcasing the wide range of services and support available to veterans as their needs change over time. During the visit, Minister Harris met veterans and residents, toured accommodation and community facilities, and learned more about initiatives including Homes for Heroes, which supports veterans transitioning from homelessness into stable housing.

The visit concluded at the Northern Beaches Veteran Wellbeing Centre, where the Minister met with team members and veterans to learn more about the practical support provided through the centre, including claims and advocacy assistance, wellbeing services, and connections to the broader veteran community.

Thank you to Minister Harris for taking the time to meet with our veterans, residents and team members, and for his interest in the services that help veterans and their families thrive throughout their lives.

Our Stronger Together intergenerational program has been ongoing at our Kokoda Retirement Village in Ballina, bringing together RSL LifeCare residents and local students through shared activities, conversation and plenty of laughter. The program is helping reduce social isolation while building confidence, empathy and meaningful community ties.

This week, our residents and students from Emmanuel Anglican College took part in a storytelling session that sparked curiosity, connection and plenty of smiles. Participants anonymously shared stories from their lives before working together to guess who each story belonged to, with one impressive student correctly identifying 13 out of 15 stories!

Our Home Care team attended the Mudgee Aged Care Expo today, joining more than 25 local service providers to connect with community members and share information about the home care support available through RSL LifeCare. The expo provided an opportunity for local residents to learn about services, facilities and activities that can help them continue living independently at home.

Events like these help build awareness of available support services and strengthen connections within the local community.

Today, on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, we pause to honour the service and sacrifice of all Australians who served during the Vietnam War.

For RSL ANZAC Village resident John Hill, service was a journey that shaped a lifetime. From national service and deployment to Vietnam, to navigating the challenges of life after service with the support of his assistance dog, John’s story is one of resilience, companionship and finding purpose in community.

Now 79, John reflects on the experiences that stayed with him, the support of fellow veterans, and the assistance dog who helps him every day.

“Veterans should never be forgotten. All veterans of any conflict should be looked after and remembered.”

Works are underway on the permanent Hawkesbury Veteran and Family Hub. We're proud to be delivering this important project in partnership with RSL NSW, supported by the Australian and NSW Governments, to create a dedicated place where veterans and their families can access support, wellbeing services and community connections close to home.

The historic Richmond Court House is being transformed into a welcoming and accessible hub for veterans and their families, that will preserve an important local landmark while helping meet the needs of the Hawkesbury's strong veteran community.

With more than 11,000 veterans and family members in the region already supported through our temporary hub in Windsor, the new facility will expand access to advocacy, wellbeing programs, referral pathways and connection opportunities for veterans and their families.

At RSL LifeCare, we're committed to enriching the lives of veterans and their families, and we're honoured to help bring this lasting community asset to life.

We thank the Australian Government, the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs, the NSW Government, the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs and RSL NSW for their partnership and shared commitment to supporting those who have served our nation.
