Have you got a story to share?

💙 Blueback Freediving & Yoga is proud to sponsor the Fremantle Underwater Film Festival for its 11th show and would love to encourage our freedive community to share their unique voices with others through film.

The Fremantle Underwater Film Festival has always been about more than films.

We're a proudly homegrown, not-for-profit festival that believes powerful ocean stories can strengthen our connection with the sea, inspire conservation, and bring communities together.

Every ticket, every volunteer, every filmmaker and every supporter helps create something bigger than a weekend of screenings. Together, we're building a community that celebrates our oceans and the people who care for them.

🎬 Film submissions are still open for a few more weeks via FilmFreeway.

Whether you're a first-time filmmaker, an experienced storyteller, or someone with a meaningful story from your local waters, we'd love to see your work.

As always, entry is FREE for:• Walyalup–Fremantle youth• First Nations filmmakers• Seniors• Unemployed community members

If you qualify for a free submission, simply email [email protected] and we'll help you enter.

Learn more and submit your film at:https://filmfreeway.com/FremantleUnderwaterFilmFestival

Why does the festival exist?

Because we believe stories change relationships.

When people feel connected to the ocean, they're more likely to protect it.

That's why we celebrate films that reveal wonder, inspire curiosity, and encourage stewardship of our blue planet.

What can filmmakers expect?

Every submission becomes part of a supportive community of ocean storytellers. Selected films are screened before passionate audiences, alongside inspiring local and international stories, with opportunities to connect with filmmakers, conservationists, artists and ocean lovers.

🤝 Want to be part of the festival behind the scenes?

Volunteer opportunities open next week. Volunteers receive a ticket to the festival in exchange for their time while helping make one of Western Australia's most loved ocean events possible.

If you'd like to support an event dedicated to ocean health, community and storytelling, we'd love to hear from you.

Please share this with anyone who has an ocean story waiting to be told. 🌊💙

One of the things we love most about breath-hold diving is that it continually invites us to deepen our understanding of ourselves. As our community grows, so too does the science exploring how apnea affects the body, mind, and nervous system.

This fascinating article highlights some of the latest research into human adaptation, performance, and safety in breath-hold activities. Most importantly, it reminds us that our understanding is still evolving.

At Blueback Freediving & Yoga, we see this as a responsibility. The way we teach should never stand still. As new evidence emerges, instructors and schools have an opportunity to learn, adapt, and refine their practices so that people can experience the benefits of freediving with greater confidence, awareness, and safety.

Whether your goal is feeling more comfortable in the water, developing a healthier relationship with your breath, connecting with the ocean, or simply spending time in nature, good education matters. Staying curious about the science is part of caring for the people we teach.

This article is well worth a read for anyone interested in where the future of apnea research may lead.

The practice of freediving is teaching physiologists how humans stretch their physical and mental limits, which in turn may improve treatments for lung and heart ailments.

❄️ Makuru at Blueback: A Season for Rest, Recovery and Renewal 🌊

As the Noongar season of Makuru settles across the southwest, the ocean reminds us of an important lesson: not every season is a season for growth and activity.

Makuru is a time of rain, replenishment and recovery. A time when many parts of the natural world slow down, conserve energy, and prepare for the abundance to come. It is a season that invites us to do the same.

For many of us in the Blueback community, the ocean is more than a place we visit. It’s a teacher. And right now, it’s teaching us the value of rest.

Whether you’ve been training hard, spending long hours at work, caring for others, or simply navigating the busyness of life, Makuru offers an invitation to pause, breathe deeply, and look after yourself.

We’re grateful to have one of our beloved BLUEBACK FREEDIVING AND YOGA freedive coaches, Kanae, offering remedial massage through Sea of Ease | Remedial Massage from the Blueback Studio every Monday and Friday.

Many of you will already know Kanae from her three years of sharing her calm presence, ocean wisdom and coaching with our community. Her love of the ocean, wellbeing and helping people feel at ease makes this a natural extension of the care she already brings to Blueback.

If your body is asking for a little extra attention this winter, consider giving yourself permission to slow down and recover.

Because just as the ocean needs seasons of renewal, so do we.

Proudly supported by Blueback Freediving & Yoga, The Mermantle Men had a fun mid-winter evening, singing at the WA Ocean Day at Gage Roads.

Encouraging to see and feel the interest of the public with our oceans, the health and our shared future.

Thanks to the Mermen for lifting spirits and bringing ocean story and song to the community - and to better men’s health & wellbeing. If they’re not freediving, sailing or swimming - these ocean men are sharing sea songs.
💙🐟🌊

Places open for the Mermantle Men! Free to join this community Men’s group. It’s now the 3-month count down to the “big gig” - Fremantle Underwater Film Festival 2-4 October 2026.

One week aboard an Indonesian sailing ship, exploring the wonders of Komodo National Park and sharing unforgettable moments together.

From drifting alongside manta rays and turtles, to swimming through clouds of fish, walking remote islands, and giving back through a beach clean-up, this trip was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.

Thank you to everyone - including the Blueback Freediving & Yoga freedivers - who joined us. Your curiosity, kindness, sense of adventure and respect for the ocean are what make these experiences so special.

These trips are never just about freediving. They’re about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, building community and remembering that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Thank you to our incredible crew, local guides and everyone who helped make this journey possible.

Album 2 of 2.

Until next time, thank you Komodo. 💙🌊

Cockburn Sound State Environmental Policy public workshops are on this weekend.
🌱🌊🐟

If you feel a connection to this tremendous, local blue space - also known as Derbal Nara - this is an event worth listening and speaking at.

Cockburn Sound is one of WA’s most valued marine environments, and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is reviewing the State Environmental Policy - its community / stakeholders role to ensure it is adequately, and comprehensively protected for its environmental, cultural, and recreational values for the next 20 years by a representative collection of people from our society.

We love Derbal Nara and value it highly as a functioning ecosystem and care deeply what happens to it - now and in the future. See you there Sunday!

Please see attached link for the community consultation sessions on Saturday 20 June and Sunday 21 June:
