Beckie Plant Launches Friends It Starts With “hello” at Orange

Join local author Beckie Plant when she launches her new children’s book Friends It starts with “hello” at Orange City Library on Saturday 20 September at 2pm.

Beckie has written and illustrated the book with colourful collages about the journey of friendship. Celebrate the joy of making new friends at the launch where Beckie will read the book, host a book related children’s activity with craft, and the book will be officially launched by Member for Orange, Phil Donato.

This heartwarming, rhyming story gently explores the internal worries children often face when meeting someone new.

📢 Foundational Supports & NDIS: Release of Grattan Institute report.

The Grattan Institute has released a report - 'Saving the NDIS' which flags changes to address the blow out of NDIS costs, and ensure effective Foundational Supports are established.

OTA sees targeted foundational supports for children with developmental delay or disability and people with psychosocial support needs as essential to providing support outside the NDIS.

The Grattan Institute Report proposes that governments use their existing NDIS contributions to fully fund foundational supports, over a 5 year transition period. While this proposal may result in foundational supports commencing by 2026, it is not without risks. It is important to note, however, that the Report has not been commissioned by the Government, and while Minister Butler has indicated it will be considered, there is no guarantee any of the recommendations will be implemented.

I think I can speak for many allied health professionals and families, we are waiting and hoping for some positive news about foundational supports soon. Such a challenging time for everyone waiting to know how and who will continue to be eligible for NDIS in the future or what options will be available. The education system are doing their best to support the growing number of children requiring support but we need to work together for the best outcomes. Thank you OT Australia for advocating on behalf of our profession.

One in four boys in NSW public schools is now identified as having a disability – most commonly autism or emotional and behavioural challenges. Nationally, one in eight boys aged 5–7 is on the NDIS.

Yet there is still no clear plan for foundational supports – and families are left in limbo. As highlighted in the Australian Financial Review, allied health voices must be heard.

This federal election, OTA is calling on all parties to:
✅ Include OTs in the design and delivery of Foundational Supports.
✅ Co-design an NDIS Reform implementation plan and staged introduction of reforms with participants and OTs – and include OTA on the NDIS Reform Advisory Committee.
✅ Ensure transitional funding for individuals reassessed as ineligible for the NDIS.

We’re stronger together!
