Ever notice how overthinking takes on a life of its own? Professor Susan Nolan-Hoeksema, who did so much in the area, talked about rumination (overthinking of the past) as adding ”yeast to dough” in a mental sense, with a heap of not so good consequences.

Why Do I Overthink?

The new season of Just a Minute with Dr Kumari focusses on overthinking :).

Why Do I Overthink Everything? Why does your mind replay conversations, search for certainty, and circle the same question without ever reaching an answer? Do I Still Want My Dad’s Approval? A Father’s Day bonus episode Why can our dad’s opinion still matter so much — even when we’re well and truly grown up? In this special Father’s Day episode of Just a Minute, Dr Kumari Valentine explores how our relationships with our fathers can shape t...

Why do I still want my dad’s approval?

It’s Father’s Day — and for many of us, our relationship with our dad is a little more complicated than a card saying “World’s Best Dad” or something straightforward.

We can love our fathers and still wish we’d heard certain words more often. We can understand why they were the way they were and still acknowledge what we needed. And sometimes, long after childhood, we can find ourselves still looking for approval — in achievement, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or worrying about what other people think.

So I made a little Father’s Day bonus episode of Just a Minute about exactly this.

And there’s a question at the heart of it:

What did you most need to hear from your dad?

Perhaps:
I’m proud of you.
I believe you.
I love who you are.
Or something completely different.

There’s also a free two-page reflection, The Words I Needed to Hear, to go with the episode. I’ll put the download link in the comments. ❤️

And whether today brings gratitude, love, grief, disappointment — or a complicated mixture of all of them — I hope there’s something gentle here for you.

Sometimes a minute is enough to say something someone may remember for decades.

Father’s Day can bring up a lot. Sending lots of ❤️ this Father’s Day.
