❄️ Chillblains (Perniosis): Keep Your Feet Warm This Winter
Have you noticed red, swollen, itchy or sore toes during the colder months? You may be experiencing chilblains (pernio).
Chilblains are a reaction of the small blood vessels in the skin to cold temperatures, often affecting the toes and fingers.
👣 Common symptoms include:
• Red or purple patches on the toes
• Itching, burning or tingling
• Swelling and tenderness
• Skin that feels sore or painful
• Occasionally, blisters or broken skin
🧦 How can you help prevent chilblains?
✔️ Keep your feet warm and dry
✔️ Wear warm, breathable socks and well-fitting shoes
✔️ Avoid sudden changes from very cold to very hot temperatures
✔️ Keep your home environment comfortably warm
✔️ Avoid placing cold feet directly against heaters or hot water bottles — warm them gradually
✔️ Keep your feet moving to encourage circulation
If you regularly experience chilblains, particularly if they are severe, persistent, blistering or breaking down, it’s a good idea to have your feet assessed by a podiatrist.
