SUPPORT
My husband, daughter and I have made a short term move to the most amazing community
Initially so Jack, Andi, Raven and I could be grounded together for a while, Jack has worked away for days or weeks at a time since we met. It was just how it had always been, we had carried on despite the fact Andi was growing up and I was on leave from my permanent employment. I have randomly travelled with Jack to wherever he has been building-sometimes because I thought I might be useful, other times because I just wanted company. But it’s never been consistent. I didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity for Andi to go to a playgroup or catch up with a friend from our CAFHS Mum/baby group or I’d take the chance for a spell with our family in Adelaide.
It wasn’t until I was on a rant about how we as a family were barely together that someone said to me ‘well you didn’t really set yourself up for success, did you?’ It’s resonated ever since!
So....support hey! I have learnt quickly to take it, give it, surround myself with it.
It’s not easy, whether it’s asking for help, deciding on boundaries to not abuse it or being flexible and realistic to be able to meet everyone’s needs.
Take the time to check your support, plan for it-not just for labour or postpartum but life! It may not be moving towns to be with family, but maybe it will be reminding yourself to take that walk alone once a week, sharing the household chores, placing boundaries on visitors in your immediate postpartum while you learn about your new family member or planning how or considering ‘will you’ return to study, work or socialising once you’re a Mum?
What if your partner, family, friends have different plans? Check in-you’re probably on the same page but your support can’t support you if they don’t how to help you succeed!
So I’ve made some changes for our success, and oh my the amazing support we’ve had has left me so grateful! Between the chaotic move from our house, Jack starting a new project, attempting food shopping, going to play gym and footy/netball, the support we’ve had has made it perfect!
Thank you for helping pack, lending us things, watching out for Andi or just saying Hi x
