Knowledge is POWER they say! Well it really is in our case. People often say ‘you’re a midwife, you’re set!’ But it’s different when it’s you, you need to take the time to learn about your and your families goals, prepare yourself (mind and body), learn and teach the tools that you believe will be most effective for you and ensure your support team is 👌
Andi’s birth was liberating... but as a midwife-the labour was not textbook plus we had a lotus birth which I had never actually witnessed before. We had a dear friend come to support Jack and I because at the time we knew we needed her. I had thought out how it might be, but what was most important was that I had communicated what I wanted to everyone because I had no idea how labour would feel or what I would need.
So small details like later that week when we planted her placenta and a mulberry tree at home-where we had got married earlier in the year, I felt like I relived the whole pregnancy, labour, birth and first week again. Andi doesn’t mind the mulberries either!
Now in anticipation of baby no 2, with a whole lot less time and no where near as much exposure to midwifery practice I find myself procrastinating and really having to prioritise the preparations.
I am looking forward to my final teaching, before baby no 2, of the positive birth program starting on Sunday 20th June with to reaffirm the positive mindset this course gave me when I started teaching it in 2019. Although the knowledge is there 🧠, it still needs provoking and most importantly I learn a lot from the participants! Reminders of what to discuss with Jack and our caregivers🗃
If you’ve been considering it but decided to procrastinate instead-I hear you! But this is it-this is the time to prioritise you, your baby, your family, your supporters. I’m in it with you.
Head to the link in bio to book your spot before 9pm tomorrow

SUPPORT
My husband, daughter and I have made a short term move to the most amazing community
Initially so Jack, Andi, Raven and I could be grounded together for a while, Jack has worked away for days or weeks at a time since we met. It was just how it had always been, we had carried on despite the fact Andi was growing up and I was on leave from my permanent employment. I have randomly travelled with Jack to wherever he has been building-sometimes because I thought I might be useful, other times because I just wanted company. But it’s never been consistent. I didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity for Andi to go to a playgroup or catch up with a friend from our CAFHS Mum/baby group or I’d take the chance for a spell with our family in Adelaide.
It wasn’t until I was on a rant about how we as a family were barely together that someone said to me ‘well you didn’t really set yourself up for success, did you?’ It’s resonated ever since!
So....support hey! I have learnt quickly to take it, give it, surround myself with it.
It’s not easy, whether it’s asking for help, deciding on boundaries to not abuse it or being flexible and realistic to be able to meet everyone’s needs.
Take the time to check your support, plan for it-not just for labour or postpartum but life! It may not be moving towns to be with family, but maybe it will be reminding yourself to take that walk alone once a week, sharing the household chores, placing boundaries on visitors in your immediate postpartum while you learn about your new family member or planning how or considering ‘will you’ return to study, work or socialising once you’re a Mum?
What if your partner, family, friends have different plans? Check in-you’re probably on the same page but your support can’t support you if they don’t how to help you succeed!
So I’ve made some changes for our success, and oh my the amazing support we’ve had has left me so grateful! Between the chaotic move from our house, Jack starting a new project, attempting food shopping, going to play gym and footy/netball, the support we’ve had has made it perfect!
Thank you for helping pack, lending us things, watching out for Andi or just saying Hi x

Preparation
Pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period thrive on it!
There are so many preparations to think of-nourishing your body, the financial preparations, preparing a nursery or purchasing car seats, thinking about babysitters for the other kids, attending clinic appointments, packing a hospital bag, preparing your support person for the birth... the list goes on!
Somewhere along the way we prepare ourselves for the physical changes our amazing bodies do to create, carry and love these tiny babies-physically and emotionally
A great way to take time to nourish your body and connect with your baby in pregnancy is yoga. Similar to hypnobirth techniques, yoga utilises the breath to relax, ground and harmonise the body
If you’re short on time or not sure if hypnobirthing might be for you, make some time to join in a prenatal yoga session or ask a yoga instructor if they can support you in a standard class near you
Or if you’re waiting for baby to come in Port Lincoln, can highly recommend

What is a positive birth?
A positive birth will look different to everyone. It’s not about drug free, pain free, vaginal or caesarean
A positive birth is about empowered women and their families making informed choices about their birth, supported by caregivers
Learning about anatomy and physiology (of women and babies), the stages of labour and techniques to attempt to assist hormones for pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period are ways the Positive Birth ProgramTM empower women and their support partner to achieve a positive birth
