Immunisation remains a simple, effective way to keep us, and those in our care, protected against vaccine-preventable diseases such as whooping cough and measles.

Like regular health checks that help identify potential health problems early, maintaining a recommended vaccination schedule is an important preventive health measure that can help to protect us at every stage of life.

As we grow and our bodies change, our immune system faces different risks, and vaccines are precisely timed to meet those changing needs.

From the hepatitis B vaccination within a week of birth to immunising against shingles later in life, this current National Immunisation Awareness Month highlights the crucial role vaccines play in safeguarding the health of individuals and communities.

More recent vaccines include meningitis, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for pregnant women, and human papillomavirus (HPV) for adolescents and young adults up to 25 years.

The doctors of One Point Medical can provide health checks and arrange immunisations as required, for you and your family.

Learning to recognise and act quickly on signs of a stroke may greatly improve our chances of survival and reduce long-term disability.

To take care of ourselves and those under our care, we can use the acronym F.A.S.T.

: : Face – numbness or drooping on one side.
When smiling, does one side of the mouth droop?

: : Arms – numbness or weakness.
When raising both arms, does one arm drift downward?

: : Speech – slurred or hard to understand.
When asked a simple question, is there trouble communicating?

: : Time – it’s critical. If you notice any of these signs, call emergency services on Triple Zero (000) immediately.

To complement our efforts to identify and treat stroke earlier, we can reduce the risk factors associated with stroke.

The doctors of One Point Medical can arrange health checks to assess your medical status, including cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

A general health check may also identify conditions linked with an increased risk of stroke, such as the heart rhythm disorder, Atrial Fibrillation.

Maintaining well-being over the winter months is often a challenge.

Cooler, wetter weather naturally leads us indoors, where we find other ways to meet our daily 30-minute physical activity quota.

Just as exercise can lift our physical well-being, adding meditation to our routine may support mental health, especially when weather limits opportunities to bask in the sunshine.

Setting aside ten minutes of mindfulness per day is an achievable starting point.

Mindfulness is a meditation that uses breathing as an anchor to stay present and to assist in returning our attention from distraction.

We can do this while walking, eating, or working, yet when practising mindfulness, we may prefer to sit in a quiet space with an outdoor view to enhance our focus.

Key to success in this form of meditation is learning to gently return to our focus on breathing without frustration.

We can use online resources to develop our breathing technique and focus, or apps to guide these and other forms of meditation.

Beyond mood, meditation may help regulate stress, enhance sleep quality and at the very least, assist our mental clarity for the day ahead.

The doctors at One Point Medical can complement these and other efforts to improve health and well-being through mental health management and coordinating care with allied health and specialists as required.

As we cover up during these cooler months, our skin experiences reduced exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays compared to summer.

This period of relative protection from the sun can promote skin uniformity, providing a clearer view for examining skin spots and moles.

As it is the final month of winter, now is an ideal time to conduct an ABCDE self-skin examination to check spots and moles for Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter and Evolving signs of potential skin cancers.

We can track spots and moles identified as asymmetrical in shape, irregular in border, uneven or darker in colour or over 6mm in diameter, as described here:

https://www.onepointmedical.com.au/skin-check-abcde-guideline/

It is also wise to ask a friend or partner to take photos of areas on our back, especially since these images can help track and identify spots and moles that evolve in size.

To complement these efforts, the doctors of One Point Medical can provide a professional skin check.

This consultation is also an opportunity to discuss areas of concern and assess your risk of developing skin cancer based on family history and your previous UV exposure from work, sport and other activities.

In some cases, minor medical procedures are required to remove and further investigate skin spots and moles.

The doctors can perform these procedures on-site with the highest standards of care.

Awareness of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular or lung disease, back problems and diabetes may provide an incentive for us to make healthier day-to-day choices.

Regardless of the condition, early detection provides time to gradually prepare for future health needs and refine our diet, exercise and lifestyle choices accordingly.

For example, identifying early-onset diabetes logically leads to low-sugar foods, increased physical activity, portioning meals and reducing alcohol intake to buffer against diabetes progression.

These measures may also assist in delaying or preventing the serious and otherwise silent progression-related complications of diabetes such as nerve, kidney, and eye damage.

Your GP is central to your health and well placed to provide continuous and coordinated care that is specific to your medical history and personal needs.

The doctors of One Point Medical take the time to listen, assess and discuss options to develop a path toward optimising quality of life and meeting your well-being goals.

Today is the final day of International Self-Care Day, which promotes healthy habits as the foundation of personal wellness and disease prevention.

Chosen for the 24th of July, represented numerically as 24/7, it represents the round-the-clock nature of looking after our health.

Practising self-care incorporates our physical, mental, and emotional health, and it can start with looking at ways we can support ourselves and connect with those around us.

Beyond a good sleep routine, a healthy weight and taking the time to enjoy what we love doing most, we can learn to say ‘no’ and ask for help when needing support.

If seeking structure in our self-care, we can create a list and add to it throughout the year while scheduling a daily time-out activity such as reading, writing in a journal, listening to music or exercising with a friend.

The doctors at One Point Medical can encourage and support proactive efforts to maintain long-term health through preventive health checks, screenings, vaccinations and chronic disease management.

Although we commonly see Type 2 diabetes develop in adults over the age of 45 years, diabetes can impact people across all ages, body types, and backgrounds.

Rising rates of childhood obesity and the way it alters how the body processes energy have seen Type 2 diabetes increasingly occurring in younger age groups.

This recent emergence of Type 2 diabetes in younger people is a notable statistical shift from a baseline of virtually zero.

Thankfully, this recent diabetes week encouraged those living with the condition in our community to speak out about what they wish they had known before being diagnosed.

An open discussion encourages everyone to seek health checks to highlight risk factors for the disease and potentially an earlier diagnosis for prompt management.

Your GP can discuss your risk factors for diabetes, including your family history, diet, exercise and lifestyle in the context of your current medical needs.

The doctors of One Point Medical encourage and support patients in maintaining their long-term health by focusing on prevention and treatment.

Adequate sleep can positively influence many areas of our immune regulation.

Letting kids sleep in a little longer over the holidays may help support immune response as a buffer against cold and flu.

Sometimes it’s also hard to gauge when a cold, flu, or other illness is developing.

Sleep is when many immune processes are co-ordinated, so meeting their sleep requirements may assist in recovery.

However, our sleep requirements change as we grow.

Pre-school kids need about 10 to 13 hours, while children between 6 and 13 years ideally need 9 to 11 hours.

Older children between 14 and 17 years require 8 to 10 hours of sleep, and once they reach adulthood, 7 to 9 hours is ideal.

At the very least, the ideal of regular, quality sleep can positively influence the mood, concentration and behaviour of kids and adults alike.

To help us get to sleep, we can encourage everyone to switch from screens to other activities, such as reading well before bedtime.

The doctors of One Point Medical can support efforts to improve the long-term health of kids through health checks, vaccinations and management of their medical needs.

Be it viruses, allergies, food or sudden exposure to bright light, sneezes can materialise unexpectedly.

A forceful sneeze can create an intense, sudden spike in abdominal and spinal pressure, with potential for back strain.

Although it's hard to avoid this involuntary muscular contraction, we can address the rapid forward jerk that directly transfers force to the spinal discs and surrounding muscles.

Keeping the shoulders back, head straight and placing one hand on a stable surface may help counteract forward movement of the torso.

If seated, we can use a lumbar roll for support, and if standing, a cushion in the lower back against the wall may help.

When able to preempt a sneeze, standing may also help reduce pressure on spinal disks.

Where back pain, allergies, or respiratory viruses are of concern, the doctors of One Point Medical are there to assist you and those under your care.
