We’ve got the basic exercise prescription back to front.

You can focus on strengthening.

You can focus on stretching.

You can focus on losing weight.

You can chase your 10,000 steps.

But underneath all of it sits something more fundamental. The ability to safely and easily get up and down from the floor.

Focus on that, at any level of capacity, whether you’re an elite athlete chasing a gold medal or an 80 year old wanting to stay healthy for the rest of your life, and something phenomenal happens in the body.

Getting up from the floor was our first ever movement practice.

It took a year to eighteen months to master as a baby, learning to move for the very first time.
It’s hardwired into us.

The instinct is so strong that every able bodied baby moves through this progression with no coach, no YouTube, no Instagram reels. It’s innate.

Come back to it as an adult, and it still holds a brilliant, still underappreciated ability to restore whole body movement. Mobility, coordination and balance, the foundations strength is actually built on.

Try it daily. Get up and down from the floor and notice what shifts.

Not about speed.

Not about how many reps.

Not about how much load you can carry while you do it.

How smoothly can you do it. How easily.

If there’s pain or dysfunction anywhere in the sequence, treat it as an invitation to restore, not a signal to push through.

That’s exactly what the Body Magic Method is built to support you to do.

If you want to go deeper, type magic in the comments and I’ll send you a free introductory lesson on restoring ankle, knee and hip health, along with a link to the course.

The biggest shift in my understanding of movement wasn’t discovering another muscle.

It was discovering fascia.

Modern exercise has largely taught us to think in terms of individual muscles. Chest. Back. Deltoids. Glutes.

But life doesn’t ask us to move one muscle at a time.

It asks the whole body to organise itself as an integrated system.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve become so fascinated by fascia. It’s our largest connective tissue network, linking the body from head to toe. But it’s also one of our richest sensory organs, constantly informing the brain about position, tension, pressure and movement.

Watch this exercise closely.

It might look like a shoulder exercise, but I’m not trying to lift my arm with my shoulder.

The movement begins from the ground. The feet connect with the floor. The legs organise. The hips rotate. Momentum travels through the body. The shoulder stays as relaxed as possible for as long as possible, allowing that momentum to flow through the arm.

The challenge isn’t creating more tension.

The challenge is discovering where tension is unnecessary.

That’s a very different way of thinking about movement.

This isn’t an exercise I’d give everyone. If your shoulder is painful, restricted or you’ve lost confidence moving it, I’d begin with the gentler restorative practices first, particularly Joint Circles. Restore freedom first. Then explore capacity.

That’s the philosophy behind the Body Magic Method.

Restore organisation before you build capacity.

When the body begins working as an integrated whole, strength, mobility, coordination and resilience all have the opportunity to emerge together.

Now I’m curious.

How does this movement feel in your body?

Not how does it look.

How does it feel?

Do you notice freedom? Restriction? Smoothness? Effort? Relaxation? Somewhere you’re holding more tension than you need?

And if there’s pain, don’t force it.

That’s not your exercise… yet.

Your body isn’t failing you.

It’s simply telling you there’s another doorway to begin with.

Practice letting go.

Trauma is stored in the body.

Injuries. Emotions. Regrets.

Worry about the future. Regret about the past.

All of it trapped. All of it held as charge, as tension, inside you.

And that charge, that tension, gets in the way of you being able to enjoy the life you have right now.

The residual trauma of the past gets carried into the present.

It interferes with your ability to experience the freedom, the energy, the vitality, the creativity that’s right there. Waiting for us. If we could just allow what’s in the way, to get out of the way.

The Body Magic Method isn’t just another exercise programme.

Not just about moving freely. Not just about restoring mobility.

It’s a practice of embodiment.

A practice of creating the conditions within, not just our physical body, but our emotional, energetic self, and our psyche. Where we can let go of what’s in the way. Where we can organically access the healing potential that’s latent within all of us.

This is one of the most powerful health prescriptions I can give you.

Take every joint in your body through its pain-free range of motion every day.

This isn’t about making the range bigger. It isn’t stretching. It isn’t strengthening.

Yet practise it consistently and you get what stretching promises. A fuller, more complete, pain-free range of motion.

The reason is the map.

Every joint circle sharpens the map your brain holds of your body, called the homunculus.

Move each joint locally, then take it from simplicity into complexity, and you clean up the communication between body and brain.

Coordination improves. Strength follows coordination. You move better. You feel better.

The body also starts to locate the real epicentres of dysfunction. In the fascia. In the joint. In the muscle. In the neurological connection.

Married with adequate hydration, nutrition, relaxation, sleep and movement, that feedback gives the body the capacity to heal those issues at their cause.

This is a long way from no pain, no gain.

This is ease, flow and connection. The brain’s ability to process information from the body, and the body’s ability to action information from the brain.

So this isn’t just a movement practice.

It’s a communication practice.

And in any relationship, when you improve the quality of the communication, you improve the quality of the outcome.

What you see here is covered in far more depth inside the Body Magic Method. The healing it has facilitated in my own body is hard to put into words.

If you want the full method, restoring mobility, pain-free range, coordination, balance and relaxation, the foundation that lets strength and endurance build safely, type the word magic in the comments and I’ll send you a free introductory lesson and a link to the course.

Getting up and down from the floor is a skill.
Not a strength test.

A skill.

Skills don’t improve through effort. They improve through relaxation, through slowing right down, through curiosity instead of judgement, and through a little play.

Smoothness isn’t speed. It’s coordination.

Watch what happens when you drop the pace.

Every transition, from sitting to kneeling, from kneeling to standing, is really a series of balance points. You’re moving from balance, to balance, to balance.

Not one big effort. A chain of small of confident handoffs.

Feel where balance shifts rather than watching the shape of the movement. That’s where the real information is.

Most approaches assume you need strong quads and a strong core before you can move well from the ground to standing.

Build the strength first, they say, and the movement will follow.

It’s backwards.

Strength is rarely what’s missing. Coordination is.

Slow down. Stay curious. Keep it low stakes. Let your nervous system feel safe enough to explore.

Do that, and the strength you need shows up on its own. Your body finally trusts the pattern.

That trust is what frees you from rigid, rehearsed movement and opens the door to something more natural. Movement that responds, instead of movement you have to think your way through.

Try it a little differently each time. Different pace, different starting point, different focus. Variety builds a pattern that adapts, not one that’s just memorised.

This isn’t about ignoring injury, or dismissing arthritis, joint degeneration, hip replacements, surgeries, or pins.

All of these can be worked with, accommodated, even eased, when we learn to move with them.

Not against them.

Next time you’re heading down to the floor, or getting back up, slow it down. Play with each transition. Get curious about what you notice.

Getting up and down from the floor might be one of the most underrated measures of how well your whole body is functioning.

For years we’ve been told that healing means pushing harder.

Stretch more.
Work harder.
Fight through the pain.

But what if your body isn’t asking for more force?

What if it’s asking for more awareness?

The Body Magic Method is built on a simple idea:

Your body knows how to heal, adapt and move with freedom.

Sometimes it just needs the right conditions to remember.

That’s why we focus on restoring movement, calming the nervous system and rebuilding trust between your brain and your body.

When that changes…

Everything changes.

If you’re ready to experience a different approach to movement, pain and healing, I’d love to show you where to begin.

Most movement systems start from the same place.

How many. How far. How hard.

Push to failure. Stretch to the end of range. Beat yesterday’s number.

I ask the opposite question.

What’s the minimum?

The smallest effort, the shortest time, that lets something actually shift, in the tissue and in the mind, so I walk into my day as a better version of myself.

More relaxed. More present. More at home in my own skin.

Movement was never only about muscle and fascia and bone and blood for me.
It’s about what it does to how I feel.

Once you know your minimum, you can always dial it up.

But the minimum does something strange.
It opens a door.

And the body walks through on its own, because it wants to move. It needed an invitation, not a whip.

This is the Chi Machine. It’s how my day begins.

There’s a term I’ve started using for this. Body literacy.

Every movement you own is a letter in your alphabet.

More letters, more words. More words, and the more clearly you can say what you mean.
Build the alphabet. Build the vocabulary. Then express freely.

Type “magic” or “freedom” in the comments and I’ll send you a free lesson.

If you asked before and it never arrived, that was a technical glitch on our end. It’s fixed. Ask again and you’ll get the new, improved version.

Making movement easy is its own kind of magic.

After all these years of studying movement, that’s one of the things I keep coming back to.

The smoothness. The coordination. The flow, so the body moves as one integrated whole, not a sum of isolated parts.

So instead of breaking movement into pieces and drilling them in isolation, look at how the body naturally wants to move.

In this case, from lying on your back to standing, in one easy transition.

Then practise that.

Like anything, the more you practise, the better you get.

You want to move smoothly? Practise moving smoothly.

You want to coordinate the whole body? Practise coordinating the whole body.

See what opens up when you let yourself move smoothly and freely.

This is what the Body Magic Method is for.

Not another exercise programme. A movement and embodiment system.

Restore awareness of your body. Come home into it. Reconnect.

Then invite it to explore the mobility and freedom it already has, and re-awaken its coordination.

When you have proprioception, mobility and coordination, strength and balance develop on their own.

Now you have a foundation. Functional freedom for life, and the freedom to choose whether you take it further into more intense training.

If you’d like to go deeper, type the word freedom in the comments below and I’ll send you a new, updated first free lesson.

Already had a first lesson from me? You’ll get the updated version.

Asked for one before and it never arrived? That was a technical glitch, now ironed out. Ask again and it’ll come through.

This won’t give you washboard abs.

If that’s what you’re after, stick with your situps, planks and scissor kicks.

The circular sit-up is after something else entirely.

Getting up off the floor and back down again, with the least effort and the most coordination.

Not just today.

In your 80s. In your 90s.

How easily you get down to the floor and back up says a lot about how freely you’ll live.

The same movement opens hip mobility and spinal mobility.

It gives your lower back a way to move that supports healing rather than guarding it.

There is absolutely a place for isolated, intense strength and conditioning work.

I just think that work belongs on a foundation.

Develop the mobility. Develop the coordination. Develop whole body function first.

Then load it up. In that order it all makes sense.

So, a question for you.

What do you want your body to be able to do a year from now?

And what do you want it still doing 20 or 30 years from now?

Tell me in the comments. I’d love to read them.

What if healing isn’t supposed to hurt?

We’ve been taught that if we’re not pushing harder…
Stretching deeper…
Working more…
Suffering a little…

Then we’re not really healing.

But what if that’s the very belief keeping us stuck?

What if the tension you’re carrying doesn’t need to be forced out…

What if it needs to feel safe enough to let go?

When the body relaxes, incredible things begin to happen.

Muscles soften.
Blood flow improves.
The nervous system shifts from protection into restoration.

Your body isn’t “doing nothing.”

It’s doing what it was designed to do.

The challenge isn’t learning how to push harder.

It’s remembering how to relax while staying present, aware and connected.

Because real healing isn’t about fighting your body.

It’s about creating the conditions where your body no longer needs to fight itself.

Maybe the deepest healing doesn’t come from forcing change…

Maybe it comes from allowing it.
