Sometimes I pause and reflect on how many different hats I have the privilege of wearing.
For the past 25 years, I have worked in our public health system caring for patients requiring emergency plastic surgery, trauma and reconstructive surgery. Alongside this, I have the privilege of caring for patients in private practice across reconstructive, aesthetic and non-surgical procedures of the face, breast and body.
Teaching has always been an important part of my career. Over the years I have had the opportunity to mentor medical students, junior doctors, plastic surgery registrars and nurses, many of whom are now respected colleagues. Seeing others grow, develop and contribute to our profession has been one of the greatest rewards.
Beyond clinical practice, I have enjoyed building. From establishing my clinic, medispa and skincare range, to now founding Vardyn, my goal has always been to find better ways to contribute—most recently by improving the way we approach skin cancer screening, surveillance and the early detection of melanoma.
Yet my most important role is one that has nothing to do with medicine.
Being a mum to three wonderful children is the greatest responsibility I will ever have. More than anything, I hope they remember not what I achieved, but how I lived.
I hope they see someone who pursued excellence with purpose, who believed in serving others, paying knowledge forward, treating people with kindness, and living with integrity.
These values have guided me as a surgeon, a teacher, an entrepreneur and a mother. They remind me that while our roles may change throughout life, our character should remain constant.
Every day is a gift, and I never take for granted the privilege of serving in the many roles I have been entrusted with.
Thank you to my family, dear friends, colleagues, mentors, patients and friends who have all shaped the person I continue to become.
There is still so much to learn, so much to build, and so many opportunities to serve.
