🌿 A new chapter in older adult care has begun at Robina Hospital with patients being welcomed into the refurbished H2 East ward.

The contemporary 20-bed ward includes a 10-bed Acute Cognitive Unit and 10-bed Acute Geriatric Unit, expanding access to specialised cognitive and geriatric services closer to home for patients and families across the central and southern Gold Coast.

Featuring a dedicated outdoor garden terrace, calming artwork from local Gold Coast artists and Gold Coast Health staff, and spaces designed to promote comfort, familiarity and wellbeing, H2 East has been
thoughtfully created to support older adults with complex cognitive, medical and functional needs.

💬 Nurse Unit Manager Tracey Miller said the opening represented an important milestone for
older adult care at Robina Hospital.

“Creating spaces that feel welcoming, familiar and supportive is incredibly important for older adults, particularly those experiencing cognitive impairment,” Tracey said.

“H2 East has been designed to help patients feel comfortable during their hospital stay while supporting the delivery of specialised care.” 👏

Congratulations to the incredible team who helped bring this vision to life and are now welcoming the first patients through the doors.

Ridge Barredo has many claims to fame. ⭐

He’s a Married at First Sight success story,💍he’s competing at his third Commonwealth Games...🏅

Then there’s his most important role – as a Child and Youth mental health nurse. 🙏

“My favourite thing about working in mental health is seeing a smile on a kid's face when they're discharged,” Ridge said, who found a home at Gold Coast Health after finding love with MAFS partner Jade Pywell.

“They often arrive unwell and upset and to see them leave with a smile and thanking us is always a win. That’s such a good feeling.”

Ridge started weightlifting when he finished playing rugby league as a 20-year-old.

A decade on and he’s one of the best weightlifters in the country, with PBs of 161kg in the ‘snatch’, almost 200kg in the ‘clean and jerk’ and a big chance of standing on the podium in Glasgow.

“When I started, I just wanted to be the best I could and it turns out that was good enough to go to the Commonwealth Games,” Ridge said.

"I finished 8th in 2018 and 5th in 2022 so this one has to be top three.”

And how does it feel knowing a special group of youngsters will be cheering him on from Robina?

“It's nice,” he smiles.

“We spend a lot of time with the kids and they know all about the Games. It's nice to know I'll have a little cheer squad here."

Finding places to be yourself. 💛

For people living with persistent pain, creativity can offer a powerful way to express experiences, build confidence and connect with others.

Through our Poet in Residence program, patients from Gold Coast Health’s Interdisciplinary Persistent Pain Centre (IPPC) explored poetry and creative writing as tools for self-expression and wellbeing.

To mark National Pain Week, more than 40 patients, family members, support people and staff came together for the Poetics of Pain event. Patients shared their poems, explored an exhibition of creative works and celebrated the power of creativity and connection in living with persistent pain.

The exhibition featuring more than 10 patient's visual poems is on display at Robina Hospital for the rest of August. Be sure to check it out when you visit. 🤩

What do you want people to know about diabetes?

This year’s Diabetes Awareness Week theme ‘Living out loud’ invited people to answer that
question, so we asked Diabetes Educator Anna (pictured left) and Endocrinology Advanced Trainee Dr McAndrew (pictured right).

Dr McAndrew said it was important for people to know that a high proportion of people live
with the condition, about 1.3 million in Australia.

She encouraged people to become more aware of the condition and what it means for those who live with it.

“For people living with diabetes, ongoing education about their condition is so important to prioritise their long-term health," she said.

Diabetes Educator Anna added that the Gold Coast Health diabetes educators are constantly challenging themselves to keep up to date with the latest technology and treatments for the condition.

"We always strive and challenge ourselves to make things as easy as possible for our
beautiful patients to manage their diabetes." 💙

Gold Coast Health staff are helping shape the future H2 East ward at Robina Hospital through photography designed to create moments of calm, comfort and connection for older adults receiving care.

Administration Officer Brooke Randall and Emergency Department Senior House Officer Ryan Churchill are among the contributors whose photographs will feature in the refurbished space.

“Having two of my photos displayed at Robina Hospital is incredibly special to me,” Brooke said.

“I hope my photos offer patients and staff a moment to breathe and reflect on brighter days we've lived and the days still to come.”

The selected staff photography collection features familiar Gold Coast landscapes, waterways and coastal scenes that will be permanently displayed throughout the future Acute Cognitive Unit and Acute Geriatric Unit. 💙

For Michelle, there is “no ‘I’ in team”, which she was quick to remind everybody after being honoured as Gold Coast Health Administrator of the Year. ✨

Chosen by her peers for her outstanding contributions over the past 12 months, Michelle (pictured middle) is quick to shift the spotlight to her colleagues.

"This recognition is for the entire admin team," she said.

"We’re the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to make things run smoothly. I’m just lucky to be part of such a supportive and amazing group of people."

Michelle found out about her award while on holiday in Prague. She was able to celebrate with a former colleague who was also on holiday in the city at the time.

Upon receiving her award at Robina Hospital, Michelle called a few colleagues to help her celebrate.

With 15 years of service, Michelle’s journey has been defined by teamwork, gratitude, and a deep love for her role.

She credits her success to the incredible nurse unit managers, nursing staff, and colleagues she’s worked with over the years. 🩷

Mental health nurse Laura says there’s something special about walking beside someone during their darkest days🕯️

“I never underestimate the importance of the role we play,” Laura said.

“On a mental health ward, you’re often meeting someone at one of the most difficult times of their life so it’s important to build a positive connection as quickly as possible.

“Forming a good relationship can be so beneficial for their care and recovery and helping them get back home is rewarding. It’s nice seeing someone through their journey.” 🙏

Laura joined Gold Coast Health fresh out of university via our Mental Health Graduate Program.

A handful of years later she is now leading others as a Clinical Nurse at Robina Hospital’s Jasmine acute adult inpatient unit.

“I really enjoy that part of my job," she said.

"It’s a role with a lot of responsibility and I’m grateful to work with such a supportive and dedicated team in Jasmine.”

Not to mention good leaders 😉
