Sometimes we tell ourselves:

“They're just stressed because of exams.”

“They'll get over it.”

“It's probably just a phase.”

And sometimes exam stress does pass.

But if anxiety is affecting your child's sleep, mood, relationships, school attendance, concentration or everyday life, it may be time to seek some extra support.

You don't need to wait until things reach crisis point.

Talking with a mental health professional can give young people a safe space to understand what's happening, develop practical coping skills and build confidence in managing difficult emotions.

At Achievable Wellbeing, Kelly supports tweens, teens, adults and families through challenging times. Helping everyone find greater balance and wellbeing.

Your child has exams.

They’re stressed.

You’re stressed because they’re stressed.

Sound familiar?

Sometimes exam anxiety can become a family affair with everyone walking on eggshells, worrying about study, results and what comes next.

Remember: you don't have to carry your child's anxiety for them.

You can support them without taking responsibility for every outcome.

Try asking:

💬 “How can I support you today?”
💬 “Do you want advice, or do you just want me to listen?”
💬 “What feels most overwhelming right now?”
💬 “What would make today feel a little easier?”

And give yourself permission to step back, breathe and look after your own wellbeing too.

A calm, connected parent can be one of the most powerful supports a young person has.

If your family is finding things tough, Achievable Wellbeing is here to help.

If exams are making your stomach churn, your thoughts race and your brain feel like it has completely switched off…

You are not failing. You are anxious. There’s a difference.

Your brain can find it harder to concentrate when you're overwhelmed. That doesn't mean you aren't capable.

Try taking one small step:

📚 Focus on one topic — not the entire syllabus.
⏰ Study in manageable blocks.
🥤 Take breaks, eat and stay hydrated.
😴 Protect your sleep where you can.
🌬️ Take a few slow breaths when your body starts going into overdrive.
💬 Talk to someone you trust when it feels too much.

And remember:

You are more than a mark on a piece of paper.

If anxiety is getting in the way of everyday life, asking for support is a strength — not a weakness.

When your child is stressed about exams, it can be tempting to say:

❌ “Don’t worry about it.”
❌ “You’ll be fine.”
❌ “Just study harder.”
❌ “Everyone gets nervous.”

Even when we mean well, these words can sometimes make a young person feel like their anxiety isn't being understood.

Try:

💛 “I can see this is really hard for you.”
💛 “You don’t have to figure everything out at once.”
💛 “Your results don’t define who you are.”
💛 “Let’s work out what would help you feel a little more in control.”
💛 “I’m here. We can get through this together.”

Connection before correction.

Sometimes the most helpful thing a parent can offer isn't another study tip — it's a calm, safe person who listens 💛

Need some extra support? Achievable Wellbeing works with tweens, teens, adults and families.

Exams can feel like a LOT

For young people, it can be more than simply feeling nervous. Anxiety might show up as:

😟 Worrying constantly about results
😴 Trouble sleeping
🤯 Feeling overwhelmed or unable to concentrate
😢 Tears, frustration or irritability
💭 Thinking, “I’m going to fail” or “I’m not good enough”

And for parents, it can be hard to know whether to encourage, reassure, step in… or simply give them space.

The good news? You don’t have to navigate exam anxiety alone.

Sometimes, having a safe space to talk through worries and learn practical coping strategies can make a huge difference.
