Born in 1207 in Balkh (in present-day Afghanistan), he later settled in Konya, where he became a respected Islamic scholar and teacher. His life was transformed by his encounter with Shams of Tabriz, which awakened a deeper dimension of love, spirituality, and divine longing within him. Through works such as the Masnavi and Divan-e Shams, Rumi expressed profound ideas about love, the soul, unity, and the search for the Divine, becoming a voice of wisdom whose words continue to inspire people across cultures and centuries.
Shams of Tabriz was a wandering mystic and spiritual seeker whose meeting with Rumi became one of the most legendary encounters in the history of Sufism. Unlike Rumi, who was already a famous scholar, Shams lived a life devoted to inner truth and spiritual awakening, challenging Rumi to look beyond knowledge and discover the fire of direct experience and divine love. Their bond was not merely that of teacher and student, but a profound spiritual companionship that changed Rumi forever. Shams disappeared mysteriously, but his influence remained alive in Rumi’s poetry, where love became a path toward knowing the deepest reality of existence.
