I was reminded again this week of the culture that still lingers in frontline services — the belief, held by some of the old guard, and even some of the new, that vulnerability is weakness.

No matter your role — whether with SA Ambulance Service, South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service, or South Australia Police — you are expected to show empathy, to care deeply, and to act under pressure. But to do all that and remain unaffected? That’s a paradox. Every call takes a piece of you — emotionally, mentally, or physically.

There is nothing weak about acknowledging that.

Elite athletes don’t become the best by going it alone. They surround themselves with physical and mental health specialists. They know that peak performance requires a team — so why should it be any different for frontline responders?

We maintain our equipment. We replace our consumables. We overhaul our vehicles. Why should your mind and body be the exception?

We may not have walked in your exact shoes, but we’ve all carried our own trauma, our own scars. Your experience isn’t completely foreign to us.

There is wisdom in recognising your limitations. There is strength in seeking help.

Your courage is real, but it is not a shield, nor is it unique. The service will find another recruit if you fall. But your family won’t find another you.

You owe it to them. You owe it to yourself.
