My Boy's Placenta ~ Atlas Ocean ππ
Atlas was born at home, into the water under a full moon.
His placenta was the largest I have ever processed, weighing 1kg, and from the moment he arrived there was something deeply mystical about the entire experience.
We honoured his placenta by keeping it attached until I felt ready to release him from it. When that time came, we gathered for a gentle cord-burning ceremony with myself, my sister, my two midwives, and my student midwife. Atlas was born into a room full on women supporting & holding me which also felt so powerful, incredibly special and sacred, a beautiful transition from womb to world.
I processed and encapsulated his placenta while wearing him in the carrier, close to my heart. As I worked, I knew his name was Atlas. There was a calm, ancient energy about him that I could feel so strongly. I had loved this name throughout my pregnancy but I was still unsure, and I knew in that moment that it was for him.
I chose to Traditional Chinese Medicine this time around for Atlas, with my daughter's placenta I prepared the raw method, but with Atlas for some reason it felt right for us in this postpartum tranition - grounding, warming, and nurturing.
I created a spiral umbilical cord keepsake and shaped his amniotic sac into a full moon, honouring the way he entered this world. I created multiple placenta prints to cherish, with my favourite framed in his room.
Now, four and a half months postpartum, I still take two capsules each day, and with the size of his placenta I still have enough to last me a few more month.
Feeling grateful for my boy, for the life and nourishment, connection my own body has been able to provide.
Life is all kinds of crazy & wonderful, as I tell my kids we will and have A Beautiful Life π€
