Sometimes the person showing the behaviour isn’t the person carrying the whole problem.
Families are systems. When one person is struggling — particularly a child or young person — their behaviour can sometimes be telling us something about what is happening around them, between people, or within the family as a whole.
Our Director and Clinical Family Therapist, Carrina Hampton, recently joined Leah Rando-Poller on the Small Talk Podcast from Kids In The Middle ™ for a conversation about family life when things get complicated.
They talk about separation, blended families, co-parenting, communication and conflict — including what happens when cooperative co-parenting simply isn’t possible — and ask an important question:
What might a child’s behaviour actually be trying to tell us?

At WA Mental Health, Family Therapy provides a space to step back from “Who is the problem?” and begin exploring “What is happening between us, and what might need to change?”
Family Therapy may support families experiencing ongoing conflict, communication difficulties, parenting challenges, separation or blended-family transitions, relationship strain, or when one family member’s wellbeing is affecting the wider family.
Because sometimes supporting one person means understanding the whole system around them.
