Sports involving rapid directional changes - such as footy, netball, skiing and tennis - make athletes susceptible to ACL injuries. And currently, 20% to 25% of athletes who return to sport after ACL reconstruction suffer a re-rupture within two years, either to the same or opposite knee.
What we see in practice, and what the literature confirms is that
athletes who return too early, without meeting objective strength and functional criteria, face a four times greater risk of re-injury.
That number is too high. But the science is showing us more clearly than ever why it happens, and how we can do better.
At getback, we believe recovery should be driven by data, not by habit.
Our evidence-based rehabilitation program following ACL reconstruction consists of:
✅ Early mobilisation and quadriceps activation (weeks 0–2)
✅ Progressive strength building and neuromuscular training (weeks 2–12)
✅ Return to running, plyometrics and sport-specific training (months 3–6)
✅ Criteria-based return to sport, not time-based (months 6–9+)
Recovering from an ACL injury is not about patiently waiting for time to pass. It is an active, precise and scientifically grounded process.
