After six months of planning and preparation, Gold Coast Private Hospital today joins the Mater family, bringing the Coast its first not-for-profit private hospital.

For 120 years Mater has cared for Queenslanders. As a not-for-profit, every dollar we make goes back into patient care, research and education. Now that care extends to the Gold Coast.

We are also proud to welcome more than 1,400 talented health workers to Mater. They are the heart of this hospital and the reason this community is in exceptional hands.

Gold Coast, we cannot wait to care for you.

Meet Elise, senior clinician and Diabetes Educator at Gold Coast Private Hospital.

This month Elise has been busy behind the scenes and out the front. For Exercise Right Week she put together an education board with free resources for staff, patients and visitors, all about the role movement plays in managing diabetes. Elise is also an Exercise Physiologist and passionate about the importance of exercise for every person.

She also took her expertise on the road, presenting "The future is sweet: from Blood Glucose Level basics to connected care devices" at the Consultant Pharmacists Conference, helping pharmacists stay across how diabetes care and technology are evolving together.

Thanks Elise for helping keep our community informed and supported!

Some patients don't just complete their recovery, they inspire everyone around them along the way.

This is the case for Dianne, who has just completed our six week Cardiac Rehabilitation Program! Having undergone open heart surgery twice in the past two years, Dianne has faced her recovery both times with the same unwavering determination, supported every step of the way by her assistance dog Buddy.

To say thank you, Dianne surprised our team with the sweetest gift: custom-made teddy bears dressed in scrubs, made especially for the staff who supported her.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator, Toni, couldn't be prouder and says Dianne's persistence has been an inspiration to the whole team.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program involves circuit-based cardio training, followed by an education session covering everything from nutrition and medication to stress management and mental wellbeing, led by our specialists.

A big congratulations to Dianne! We wish you the best for the rest of your recovery journey.

Today we welcomed General Practitioners to β€˜Clinical Insights into General Medicine and Surgery’, a day of learning, collaboration and connection held at the Sheraton Grand Mirage.

The program brought together a strong line-up of specialist presentations, including:

- Dr Christian Ibraheem and Dr Victor Liew (Bariatric & General Surgery)
- Dr Louise Ciin and Dr Sneha Krishna (Endocrinology)
- Dr Mina Kaddis (General Surgery)
- Dr Michael Phegan (Orthopaedics – Foot & Ankle)
- Dr Cu Tai Lu (Colorectal Surgery)
- Dr Donald Angstetra and Dr Sally Cohen (Gynaecology)

With case discussions and different specialist perspectives in the room, GPs walked away with practical tools they can put into practice with their own patients.

Days like these are all about keeping our GP community connected and supported, with access to the latest evidence and specialist know-how to help them do what they do best.

Happy NAIDOC Week πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

This week, we celebrate and recognise the history, culture, achievements and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A big congratulations to our amazing Director of Nursing, Denise Hartley, who is retiring after an incredible 50 years in nursing! πŸŽ‰

At a special breakfast this morning, Denise reminisced over stories from across her career and how much nursing practice has changed since she began training in August 1976 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide. Pictured here, she was, in her own words, "bright-eyed, naive and very, very proud to be called a nurse" (especially when in her uniform!).

The next 45 years were filled with multiple moves across Adelaide, Murray Bridge and regional Queensland, before settling on the Gold Coast. Along the way, Denise completed her midwifery training in Adelaide (which she described as "absolutely her passion"), went on to complete her RN qualification and undertook postgraduate studies in Child Health and Business Administration. Her nursing career spanned many maternity units, special care nurseries, operating theatres and Birth Suites, before she stepped into the Director of Nursing position here with us. She described her years as DON at GCPH as the happiest of her entire career.

"I feel incredibly proud, fortunate and deeply satisfied with my nursing career which has given me lifelong friendships, unforgettable experiences and a deep sense of purpose," Denise says.

A massive congratulations, Denise and thank you for your enormous contribution to our hospital and the field of nursing!

In 2025, it is estimated that 14,784 Australians were diagnosed with bowel cancer. Bowel cancer was also responsible for taking the lives of 5235 Australians last year, making it the second most common cause of cancer death in Australia.

Whilst the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease does not discriminate, affecting people of all ages. Common symptoms can include blood in your stools, a recent and persistent change in your bowel habits, unexplained low blood count, persistent abdominal pain or discomfort, unexplained weight loss or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely.

However, not everyone experiences symptoms, particularly in the early stages of the disease. This is why it is important to participate in regular bowel cancer screening. Australians aged between 50 to 74 are sent a free bowel cancer screening kit every 2 years as part of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Persons aged 45 to 49 can also request for a free test kit to be mailed to them. Learn more at bowelcancer.org.au.

If you have any concerns, talk to your healthcare provider about bowel cancer screening and encourage others to do the same. Early detection saves lives.

❀️ This Men's Health Week, we're encouraging men to take a moment to check in on their heart health.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Australian men, yet many of the biggest risk factors can be identified and managed early through regular check-ups and conversations with your doctor.

We spoke with Gold Coast Private Hospital interventional cardiologist Dr Naim Mridha about why heart health matters and the biggest mistake many men make when it comes to looking after it.

Q: Why is heart health so important for men?

Dr Naim Mridha: Heart disease remains one of the biggest threats to men's health. Men tend to develop heart disease earlier than women, and many of the major risk factors - including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes - often have no symptoms. Understanding your blood pressure, cholesterol and other key health markers can be a powerful first step towards positive change.

Looking after your heart isn't just about living longer - it's about staying healthy, active and present for your family, work and the things that make you happy.

Q: What's the biggest mistake men make when it comes to their heart health?

Dr Naim Mridha: Waiting too long to seek help.

Many men dismiss symptoms because they're busy, stressed or don't think it's serious. Symptoms such as chest or neck pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, unexplained blackouts, a decline in exercise capacity and even erectile dysfunction shouldn't be ignored.

When it comes to heart disease, early assessment and prevention can make all the difference.

If you think you may be having a heart attack, call Triple Zero (000) immediately as β€˜time is muscle’ when it comes to your heart.
