Give your child time to say "NO" 💛

How to Help Your Child Communicate Their Boundaries ✨

When you offer your child something they don't want, pause and give them time to respond. They might shake their head, push the item away, look away, grimace or make a sound. These are all communication attempts worth noticing 🌱

The next step is just as important: honour their communication. When your child shows you they don't want something, listen and respond appropriately. This helps them learn that their communication matters and that they can influence what happens around them.

You can practise throughout the day during mealtimes, bath time, getting dressed, reading books and playing games. Everyday routines offer plenty of natural opportunities to model "No" and support your child's communication.

Rather than making it a formal lesson, keep it natural, follow your child's cues and give them plenty of time to respond. The goal is to help them feel heard and understood 💫

Make learning "NO" fun and natural 💛

Instead of asking your child to repeat "No", create everyday opportunities where the word naturally makes sense. Offer different snacks, toys or cups and let your child show you what they do and don't want.

Next, make it playful! Pretend teddy doesn't want broccoli or a toy car, and model "No!" before offering something teddy likes. Silly moments can help keep your child engaged and make learning enjoyable 🌱

Finally, model the word yourself. Keep it short, clear and natural without asking your child to repeat you. Over time, your child may begin to copy the word and use it to express their own preferences.

Remember, the goal isn't to make your child say "No" on demand. It's to give them a meaningful way to communicate their choices and boundaries 💫

Children need to know it's okay to say "NO" 💛

Why Teaching "NO" Is Just as Important as "MORE" ✨

When teaching early communication, we often focus on words like "More", "Help", "Eat" and "Drink". These words help children ask for what they need, but communication is also about expressing what they don't want.

Children need ways to say no to unwanted food, another game, tickling, another hug or someone taking their toy. Every child deserves a safe and appropriate way to express their boundaries 🌱

Without the words to communicate refusal, children may rely on crying, throwing, pushing, running away or having a meltdown to show how they feel.

Teaching "No" gives children another way to express themselves, communicate their preferences and let others know when something isn't right. When we listen to their communication, we help them feel heard, understood and respected 💫

Sometimes, one little word can make a big difference 💛

How Teaching "NO" Can Help Reduce Frustration ✨

A child who pushes things away, screams or hits may be trying to communicate that they don't want something. Without an effective way to express themselves, frustration can build when others don't understand their needs.

Instead of focusing only on teaching more names for objects, we can help children learn useful words like "No". Start with simple choices during play and model the word when your child is offered something they don't want 🌱

Your child might begin by shaking their head, making a sound or eventually saying "No". Celebrate these attempts and keep modelling the word in meaningful situations.

When children have more ways to express what they want and don't want, they can feel more understood. Supporting communication can help reduce frustration and give children a more effective way to express themselves 💫

Sometimes, behaviour is a child's way of communicating 💛

Why "NO" Is One of the Most Powerful Words to Teach Your Child ✨

When children cry, throw toys or have meltdowns, they may be struggling to communicate what they want or how they feel. Sometimes, they need support to express themselves in ways others can understand.

We've already explored core words like "More", "Help", "In", "Out" and "Go". Today, we're looking at another important word: "No"! 🌱

Research by Banajee, DiCarlo and Stricklin identified 23 core words that made up around 96% of toddlers' communication in their study. Words like "No" help children reject things, protest, make choices and express when something doesn't feel right.

In this video, we'll explore why "No" is such a valuable early word, how it can help reduce communication-related frustration, and how to teach it through play and everyday routines.

Giving children ways to express themselves can help them feel heard, understood and supported 💫

Every little attempt at communication matters 💛

Your Child Doesn't Need to Say "GO" Perfectly ✨

Your child might say "g", try "gah", look at you, reach towards the bubbles or smile because they know what's coming next. These are all meaningful ways of communicating!

Celebrate every attempt, even when your child isn't saying the word clearly yet. Keep modelling "go" during fun, everyday activities and give your child plenty of opportunities to hear it in context 🌱

Children often need repeated exposure to words in meaningful situations before they begin using them independently. There's no need to rush or put pressure on your child. Enjoy the little moments, follow their interests and celebrate their progress along the way 💫

Make everyday play a chance to learn 💛

10 Fun Ways to Teach Your Child the Word "GO" ✨

You don't need complicated activities to help your child learn new words. Everyday play can create wonderful opportunities to practise communication in a fun and meaningful way.

From toy cars and bubbles to swings, slides and rolling a ball, try pausing before the exciting part of an activity. Model "go!" and then let the fun begin. Repeat the routine so your child can connect the word with what happens next 🌱

You can also try wind-up toys, chase games, toy trains, running races and lift-up games. These predictable routines give your child plenty of opportunities to hear "go" and learn how communication can make things happen.

Remember, your child doesn't need to say the word straight away. Keep modelling it, follow their interests and enjoy the interaction together. Every playful moment is an opportunity to build communication skills 💫

Let communication happen naturally 💛

Stop Asking Your Child to "Say Go" ✨

It's easy to fall into the habit of holding up a toy and repeatedly asking your child to say a word. But saying "go" over and over doesn't necessarily help them understand how to use it in real-life situations.

Children learn language through meaningful experiences. They need to discover that their words can make things happen and help them connect with others 🌱

Try using "go" during fun activities! Say it to start the bubbles, make the swing move or begin a race. When your child sees that communication has a purpose, they'll have more reasons to use their words.

Less pressure, more meaningful play. That's where language learning can really begin 💫

Core words can make a big difference 💛

Why Toddlers Don't Need Hundreds of Words to Communicate ✨

When teaching language, many parents naturally start with words like "dog", "car", "banana" and "ball". These words are useful, but it's also important to teach core words that children can use in many everyday situations.

One study found that just 23 core words accounted for around 97% of toddlers' everyday communication needs. These words give children more opportunities to express themselves, interact with others and communicate what they want or need 🌱

By focusing on words that can be used again and again in different situations, we can help children build functional communication skills that make a meaningful difference in everyday life 💫
