β€œIsn’t it just gardening??” 🧐

I got asked this the other day. My initial emotional response was defensiveness at my occupation but then I internally reminded myself to have empathy and respond with compassion and education. What resulted was a deep and positive conversation. 🌱

So what is the actual difference between therapeutic gardening and just spending time in the backyard?

While all gardening is good for the soul, Therapeutic Horticulture is different because of the intent.

As a Nurse and Horticultural Practitioner, I see the garden as a clinical tool.

β€’ Gardening: Focused on the output. You want the perfect lawn, the biggest tomatoes, or a w**d free garden bed.

β€’ Therapeutic Gardening: Focused on the person. I use the garden to reach specific health goals, like improving fine motor skills, reducing anxiety or building cognitive memory.

In my sessions, we are not just "digging in the dirt." I use scents to trigger memories, tools to build grip strength and choose spaces that regulate the nervous system. It’s about using nature as a co therapist to help people live more independent, joyful lives.

Have you ever felt a shift in your mood just by stepping outside? That’s the "therapy" starting.
